Beverly, Massachusetts is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The population was 24,948 at the 2010 census. Beverly is part of the Boston metropolitan area. It is bordered by Winthrop to the north, Cambridge to the east, Quincy to the south and West Roxbury to the west. The name Beverly comes from two grants made in 1636 and 1638 by King Phillip IV of England to Colonel John Beverly and his son John. The grant included land on which Beverly now stands. In 1702, when Worcester County was created, Beverly became part of it. In 1821, it became part of Norfolk County. In 1825, there were 9 houses in Beverly; 3 blacksmiths and 6 sawyers; 2 printers; 1 attorney; 1 doctor; 1 grocer; 1 postmaster general; and 7 farmers with 97 head of cattle and 269 acres (28 ha) of land surveyed for cultivation). By 1830 there were 13 houses with a total population of 362 residents (this number increased rapidly during this time as more families moved into the town). In 1835 local resident Joshua Green bought 4 lots adjoining Shirley Pond for $5 each from Nathaniel Bacon who had first offered them for sale in 1824 but had not yet built a house on them himself because he intended to build an Arsenal at Northborough instead. This marked the beginning of what would become known as Green's Row or Strawberry Row since these new Lots are now bounded by Washington Street (north), Arlington Street (west), Hennepin Avenue (south), and Park Square (east). A store opened on South Arlington Street in 1836 serving all citizens within one-mile radius including those living beyond one mile only if they could afford horses drawn wagons ($1 per day); this store continued until 1915 when it was replaced by a larger grocery store called "Gleason's" that still stands today across Washington St., just south of Arlington Ave., between Park Square & Commonwealth Ave..
