Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Barnstable was Captain John Smith on December 17, 1629. He and his family were among the first to purchase land from the native Wampanoag people on Cape Cod. Barnstable became a town on May 20, 1852, when it was merged with nearby Quincy to form the new town of Quincy-Barnstable. The merger occurred because Barnstable had outgrown its own smalltown atmosphere and felt that larger towns were providing more amenities than they could dish out. Quincy-Barnstable has since been renamed Wellesley after Lady Wellesley who donated land for a school and library in 1873. According to the United States Census Bureau, Barnstable has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 299 people, 115 households, and 86 families residing in the town. The population density was 813/square mile (320/km²). There were 148 housing units at an average density of 353/square mile (147/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 1% of the population. There are no buildings located within walking distance from most points throughout Barnstable except for one gas station which happens to be right next door to a Dunkin' Donuts so you can't go too far without buying something if you're looking for someplace to eat later on your trip!

Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,883 at the 2010 census. Barnstable was first settled in 1636 by Increase Mather and his family. It became a part of Plymouth Colony in 1692. In 1821, it became the town of Barnstable Village. It lost its village status in 1922 and reverted to its original name of Barnstable until it gained town status again in 1990. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,883. The history of Barnstable begins with Increase Mather who came to this area from Ipswich, England in 1636 and built a house on what is now Main Street. He made profits from trading with Native Americans and soon owned several farms in this area including one which he used as an headquarters for his maritime business ventures during the early days of American colonization. In 1722 when Plymouth Colony split into two groups due to differences over religion - Congregationalists wereorthern while Puritans weresouthern - Barnstable sided with the southern group and became part of Plympton Village. On July 14th, 1821 when Plympton Village changed hands following a dispute between two factions within its community - one led by Abijah Morse (a former member of Plymouth Colony's Board of Selectmen) and another led by John Durden (a Whig) - Barnstable voted to become the new town hall although their leaders did not actually arrive until August 4th because they had been delayed at sea aboard HMS " Pegasus ". The first settler in what would become known as Barnesboro was Samuel Brown who arrived around May 1st, 1692 according to local historical records; however some sources claim that he may have come earlier or even stayed longer than that given that there are references to him both before and after this date scattered throughout our community records which suggest he likely resided for some time here already! SamuellBrown left behind him three children: Sarah (baptized October 30th), Jonathan (baptized November 3rd)and Hannah (baptized December 12th). All three children would grow up here eventually becoming important citizens involved with many aspects of local life including education & trade/commerce amongst other things! Samuel Browns home still stands today next to where he lived on North Main Street; you can walk right along side it if you want! Many people believe that his house acted as inspiration for what is now North Church Road! This story goes on but we will leave it there for now since we’re getting close [to] our lovely little town named after one such fine man – Samuel Browns house!! Barnstable was first settled in 1636 by the Barnstable men, who came from the town of Barnstaple, England. The first settler in the area was John Farrin. The town was named after Sir Francis Drake and his ship "Drake" which landed on nearby Cape Cod in 1564. The town grew rapidly and by 1775 it had a population of over 1,000 people. It became an important sea port and during World War II it played an important role as a naval base. In 1991, the town merged with neighboring Wellfleet to form the current municipality of Barnstable.
