In 1768–69 James Keneally built a brick house on what is now Cliff Road in Quincy which was used as a meeting place for townspeople until 1814 when it was destroyed by fire. The first post office opened in 1819; it continued until 1839 when it was replaced by the present day barnstable post office building. On July 4, 1775, during the American Revolution, more than two hundred people from surrounding villages gathered at Fenway Park in Boston to celebrate America's independence (the first public celebration of this kind). This event is considered to be one of the earliest large-scale celebrations associated with modern American culture and has been cited as an inspiration for many subsequent events including Woodstock Festivalivals and Fourth of July fireworks displays across America
