Barnstable, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Barnstable is one of two towns in Plymouth County—the other being South Dartmouth—and it is the only town with a charter from the Massachusetts General Court. It was founded by Puritans in 1630 as an agricultural community on the edge of Buzzards Bay. The first settler in what would become Barnstable was John Winthrop and his daughter Margery Peake. In 1633, Barnstable became part of Plympton Colony and participated in King Philip's War against the French. After this conflict ended, many settlers left to form new colonies throughout New England. In 1635, Barnstable became part of Exeter Colony and its founders were Reverend Samuel Maverick and Captain John Smith (founder of Plymouth). In 1756, after serving as captain of HMS "Stede Bonnet" during the French and Indian War, Lt.-Colonel James Bowdoin moved his family to Barnstable from Lebanon Valley to take up homesteading there. He began construction on what would be called Bowdoin House which he completed in 1760. The house still stands today within the town limits of Barnstable. During much of its history as an agricultural community, Barnstable relied heavily on raising hay for local mills which produced paper goods for export across America until world war II when a more diversified economy brought about large-scale production at nearby factories such as Danforth Paper Mills (now Unicon Corporation).
