Barnstable, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,557 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area and the New England metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1636 by Pilgrims who had arrived from England. The original name of the town was "Plymouth." In 1795, Barnstable became a part of Massachusetts and changed its name to Barnstable County. The county courthouse still stands in downtown Barnstable and is used as a courtroom for civil and criminal cases. Barnstable has been inhabited by people since pre-historic times. In 18th century documents it is mentioned that there were Native Americans living in what is now Barnstable County. One account says that smallpox killed many of them; however this may be an exaggeration or fiction based on research done today because no such disease exists on these shores anymore. In 1636, English settlers moved into what is now Barnstable County from Plymouth Colony under the leadership of Captain John Winthrop III's wife Katherine Winslowe (née Brewster). After landing they built Fort Saybrook on Cape Cod to protect their new home from French attacks during King Philip's War (1605-1611). They also began trading with other colonists located along the coast including Nahant Valley natives who traded goods such as sealskins for goods like tobacco and shipbuilding timber which they exported to France. A large number of Puritans fled religious persecution back east during King George's War (1745-1751) so when General Gage laid siege to Boston he ordered all male citizens over 25 years old between May 6th and September 30th 1755 to leave North America for fear they would spread Tory sympathies among their fellow Patriots should hostilities continue beyond those dates. By October 1st almost everyone but about 60 men had left excepting around 20 men who were forced march downriver through snowdrifts towards unknown destinations Superior River valley where they died from cold weather conditions January 9-10th 1756 at about 14 miles due south of present day Ipswich MA . Many women, children, and elderly members of the community along with numerous servants did not make it out alive . Aftermaths proved too much for most able bodied persons so many were compelled to take up fishing or farmstead work while others found refuge with friendly Indians until British troops reached their location late November 1755 following more than three months long siege giving them ample time to gather supplies before departing without loss or gain any soldiers or fodder.. As per colonial law anyone found living within 200 miles of Boston after being ordered by Governor Massasoit not only suffered monetary fines but transportation back across state lines ended their days as well… This order became known as The Great Migration which led directly to later waves of American colonists seeking political independence from Great Britain

Barnstable, Massachusetts is a small town located in the southeastern quarter of Massachusetts. The population was 7,745 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Suffolk Combined Statistical Area. Barnstable borders Salem and Ipswich to the south, Quincy to the east, Medford to the north, and Wellesley to the west. The history of Barnstable dates back before English settlement in what is now Massachusetts. The first European settlers came overland in 1620 and named their new land "Beacon Hill." In 1628, it was granted to John Winthrop by King James II for his support during the Glorious Revolution. Winthrop then built a house on Beacon Hill and made nearby farms his primary residence. From here he led an active life as a farmer and public official. He also founded two schools – one for boys and one for girls –and helped found two churches: First Baptist Church in 1704 (now called Westfield Baptist Church) and Second Anglican Church in 1711 (now known as North Parish). In 1812, Barnstable became part of Springfield County through order of Gov.- Gen Jonathan Edwards. At that time it consisted of only five settlements: Beacon Hill, Middle Harbor Village, North Harbor Village, South Harbor Village, and Walden Pond Settlement; all but Walden Pond were incorporated into Springfield when that county was created from parts of Worcester County on April 1st., 1814. The town's name derive from its location on Beacon Hill which had been renamed "Hallowell" after Captain John Hallowell who explored this area in 1629 with Capt.[e]nathan Oldham while exploring behalf of Plymouth Colony under Governor William Bradford.* (*See "History - Barnstable", link below for more information about Hallowell.)
