This resulted in Sandwich becoming one of America's earliest towns when it was formally founded by British colonists on December 15th, 1764." After Confederation (the United States of America) was ratified in 1845, most businesses closed down due to wartime restrictions placed upon them by Congress. However, one business that continued operations throughout World War II was Nantucket Whaling Company which processed whale meat for export before America entered World War II." Barnstable, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,895 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Suffolk County after Somerville. Barnstable was first settled in 1630 by English Puritans and their families who had emigrated from Dorset, England. The first settler named "Barnstable" was John Barnet who landed on the east coast of what is now Barnstable Bay on November 5th, 1630. In 1737, Captain Samuel Sloat claimed land that included present-day Barnstable Harbor.Captain Sloat's ship "Nereus" anchored off of what is now the eastern tip of Main Street in today's town center on December 12th of that year and Spanish explorer Francisco Pacheco sailed into harbor to take possession of this territory as part of his exploration for New Spain. On February 2nd 1738 the English Crown granted Captain Samuel Sloat a license to build a wharf at present day downtown with rights to fish and harvest shellfish in these waters including lobster (and later clams). The Townspeople petitioned for incorporation as a village in 1836 but it failed because there were not enough residents interested in moving to such an unincorporated community with only 3 stores and no post office! In 1854, when Ipswich got incorporated as a village too large for Barnstaple proper and decided to annex it into theirlarger municipality; both towns set up post offices within their respective villages - one serving each community - which continued until 1978 when both towns amalgamated into one larger municipality with all citizens being treated equally under one municipal government! During World War II many people from Barnstaple enlisted in the military service stationed throughout Great Britain including those who worked at RAF Burbank airfield where they flew Spitfires and Hurricanes among others. Many homes were built here during this time including Air Ministry Headquarters which still stands today across from American Post Office located next door currently housing a branch office for Plymouth Gas Company
