The shop was run by John Fenton and his son Charles Fenton until 1892 when it closed down due to competition from other businesses. In 1907, Leland Copley opened a hardware store on High Street which became one of the most successful hardware stores in New England. In 1951, Ralph Matson bought the business and changed its name to Matson-Barnstable Hardware & Home Depot. In 1969, he sold it to Bernard Hickey who kept it as an individual business until 2007 when it was purchased by John Rourke who plans to turn it into a museum about Barnstable's history.

The economic development of Barnstable has been based on its natural resources such as fishing and forestry; however, since 2000 many businesses have relocated to larger towns in nearby counties during economic recession times because there are no corresponding jobs available in Barnstable or elsewhere in Plymouth County.

Barnstable, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,867 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Suffolk County and it is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Barnstable was first settled by Loyalists who fled British rule in North America during the American Revolution. In 1775, while still under British occupation, Barnstable voted to become an independent town and received its charter from the English government on December 15, 1775. From then until 1847 it was governed by a board of burgesses which consisted of five maleselected for two years each with power to pass resolutions and make laws without consulting the rest of the townspeople. The first postmaster general of Massachusetts was George Washington's brother-in-law Benjamin Franklin who served from 1807 to 1809; he also acted as treasurer and moderator of the town meeting. During World War II there were many large munitions plants located in or near Barnstable including Pultneyville Arsenal (now used as an agricultural field), Beechcroft Arsenal (now Beechcroft Manor), West Shore Ammunition Plant and East Shore Ammunition Plant. Many people who lived near these plants lost their lives when they were destroyed during World War II including Edward Mosely Sr., a musician and composer whose family owned one of these plants; his son Edward Mosely Jr., also a musician; John Waddell III, an advertising executive; Calvin Coolidge; Admiral Chester Nimitz and others
