Today, Barnstable is a small town located about 25 miles north of Boston and is home to a population of about 100 residents.
Barnstable's early history is tied to the land. The town was first settled in 1636 by Puritan settlers from England. The area that now forms Barnstable was part of a called Winnipesaukee, which was named for the Winnipesaukee River. In 1646, the English Crown granted land in what is now Barnstable to Major John Winthrop. The town was first known as "Winthropstown" and later as "Barnstable." The town's first school opened in 1723 and it continued to be open until 1857. During the Revolutionary War, Barnstable sided with Great Britain and participated in battlements surrounding Boston. After the war, the town became Patriotism center and many wealthy British citizens moved into the town. In 1835, a company of soldiers under General Philip Schuyler arrived in Barnstable and were headquartered at Fort Devens on Main Street. After Schuyler's death in 1837, his brigade passed through Barnstable on their way back home to New York City. During World War II, many businesses were closed due to wartime shortages of materials such as food or gasoline but many residents still managed to survive without any help from government assistance. Many homes were destroyed during the bombing campaigns of 1941-1945 but most residents rose above difficult times by rebuilding quickly using local resources and self-reliance
