Barnstable was founded in 1692 as a small fishing village on the Cape Cod Peninsula by Puritan settlers from England. The town's name comes from its location at the mouth of the river Narragansett Bay and from a grant given to it by King George II in 1711. In 1800, when Barnstable became an incorporated town, it had a population of 5,000 people. The history of Barnstable begins with two fishing villages on the cape cod peninsula: Northborough (founded c1692) and Southborough (founded 1694). Northborough soon developed into an established community with its own schools and businesses; while Southborough remained primarily a fishing village until after 1802 when it joined Barnstable as an incorporated town. Since early colonial times, there have been several significant events associated with Barnstable: first came permanent English inhabitants in 1692 when Puritans arrived from England; then followed waves of Irish immigrants during the late eighteenth century who helped develop farming economy; finally, waves of Italian immigrants during World War II brought about increased industrial development which continues to this day. In addition to its long history as an agricultural center and scientific production center for Plymouth County through most of 19th century especially due to contributions made by men such as Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail, other major industries that have continued operations here include shipbuilding throughout most of 20th century (the old Hingham Shipyard still operating) while also expanding into new areas such as information technology (primarily via computer/internet activity), metalworking (particularly aluminum), automotive manufacturing (with several factories built here including Atherton Foundry), textiles (including one now operated by Walmart), real estate development (including several million dollars invested inMBTA rail station redevelopment) along with numerous restaurants and bars throughouttownsite which continue operation despite various budget cuts over time

Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,893 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the south side of the Merrimack River and borders the cities of Lowell and Northampton to the north, Somerville to the east, and Everett to the south. The first known inhabitants of what is now Barnstable were two families who settled in 1712. They were probably named after Francis Barnstaple (1649-1719), an English gentleman who had settled in New England in 1689. He had been naturalized as a US citizen and bought land in Plymouth County from Sir William Johnson in 1692. In 1729, John Adams moved from Chelmsford, Connecticut to establish himself as a physician in Dartmouth on Cape Cod where he met his wife Sarah Waldo (1702-1776). They married at Pemaquid Township Meetinghouse on April 12, 1729. Adams conducted medical experiments there which led him to win a share of £100 worth of prize money from George Washington for his work on inoculating horses with new strains of tularemia bacteria while he was director of military hospitals at Valley Forge during the American Revolution. Afterward he continued these experiments at Harvard University until his death in 1795. The first post office was established in 1821; it changed its name to Barnstable before becoming Barnstable Town Hall when it opened its doors on December 12, 1827. At that time it served only residents of Barnstable Township; by 1863 all residents had been annexed into Plymouth County. In 1906 part of what is now Easton became part of BarnstableTownship; this change took place because people living east of Rte 9 tended increasingly toward services provided by Plympton Village instead and objected to being forced out into another township without their choice or representation within it. During World War I many local businesses closed due to shortages caused by munitions rationing; however most operations recommenced once production resumed after Armistice Day 1917 under direction from Mayor James Fenton Jr., who also chaired an emergency Select Committee formed by then Governor Winthrop Alden whose purpose was "to investigate conditions prevailing throughout Massachusetts prior to and during World War I."
