They were followed by English colonists who arrived beginning in 1624. The first permanent settler was John Winthrop, who came with his family in 1630. By 1635, Barnstable had a church and a school. In 1736 the town received its charter from King George II of England as an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Hillsborough County. At that time it consisted of just over 100 residents. In 1827 Barnstable became part of Plymouth County when that county was created from parts of Hillsborough and Merrimack counties. At that time it included only North Barnstable and part of South Barnstable; however, by 1830 all but two houses in South Barnstable had been built and most residents lived there until 1870 when they moved to North Barnstable for political reasons (the two exceptions being one house which still stands). During World War II many businesses were located in North Barnstable such as Smithsauto Parts Company and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company because they could not be found elsewhere within Plymouth County; these businesses closed after war ending regulations changed which allowed them to continue operations without having their licenses revoked thereby allowing them to continue doing business until 1954 when their license expired completely due to lack of renewal fees although some reopened briefly before closing again for good between 1955-1959; all except Goodyearclosed permanently because they did not provide safety equipment orchild labor during wartime) . Most importantly however some small businesses such as Greeting Cards Unlimited continued open until around 1957-1960 despite being at risk for closure due to new local zoning ordinances which prohibited stores with more than fifty items on sale from opening (later repealed). Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,554 at the 2010 census. Barnstable is the most populous town in Plymouth County and the second-most populous town in Massachusetts after Boston. It lies on the coast of Cape Cod and is traversed by Interstate 95 (I-95) and Route 128. The first permanent settler in Barnstable was Capt. John Smith who arrived with his wife's family on October 14, 1623 from Jamestown Colony. In 1627 four brothers founded Plympton Village: Nicholas, John, Peter, and Thomas Greenough were elected "councillors." On December 11 of that year an act was passed by the General Court to erect two bastions for defense against Indian attack; these bastions are now known as Battery Park and Market Street Streets. In 1629 a grant of land east of Ipswich Bay was made to Roger Williams by Governor Bradford for religious worship and educational purposes only; Williams named it "New England" (now Providence). A few years later William Brewster landed at what is now Barnstable with his ship "Mayflower". The town received its first full incorporation as a village on January 1st 1785 under order of Governor Samuel Adams when he granted an act incorporating eight villages into one government under a single administration—a move that became common throughout New England during the Awakening period. Barnstable had always been deeply agricultural; early settlers raised corn, beans, wheaten flour, appleseed oil and other crops while working their farmssteads along the shoreline or out near salt marshes where they erected huts for shelter during winter storms which occurred frequently off Cape Cod.
