Barnstable was one of the original towns in Massachusetts, but it wasn’t until 1855 that it became a municipality. The first mayor was Solomon Stonington and the first Selectman was John Payson. There were only 12 residents when Barnstable incorporated as a municipality; however, by 1870 there were over 100 people living here! One of the most famous residents of Barnstable was Bob Dylan. He grew up here and spent his formative years attending school at Shelburne Academy (nowurtle academy). After high school he decided to move away from Boston to start his own music career and eventually found himself living in Barnstable full time. While living here he wrote several songs which he later recorded on albums such as “The Times they are A-Changin” and “Blonde on Blonde”. In 2016, Barnstable joined the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as part of an effort to increase gun safety across all states in response to changes nationwide with regard to gun control laws following December 14th, 2015 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut which left 26 dead including 20 children!

Barnstable, Massachusetts is a small town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated city in Massachusetts and the second-smallest municipality in New England after Concord, NH. The name "Barnstable" means "farmstead on the bay". The area now comprising Barnstable was first settled by English traders as early as 1629. In 1718 Joseph Bradford purchased land here from Captain John Smith for £6 sterling. He built a house and store on what is now State Street. In 1724 he sold his holdings to Nathaniel Read of Ipswich for £160 sterling. After Read's death in 1728, his widow married Colonel John Tillinghast of Ipswich and they continued to live here until her death in 1773. In 1814 Barnstable became one of the townships of Suffolk County; it reverted to its original status as a village when that township was abolished in 1835. The village had a total population of 1,812 during its brief existence; however it declined rapidly after that date until its demise by incorporation into the larger town on April 15, 1915 (see Barnstable Village). The present day downtown core was begun shortly before World War II when General Electric built their main plant on what is now State Street between George and King Streets. This led to an increase in traffic because much of neighboring Somerville had been abandoned due to bombing raids during World War II which destroyed many homes and businesses around here including GE's chemical plantsfacility across King Street from where soldiers were quartered during war time Today there are few if any buildings left from this era other than some remnants near GE's old site along with some local architecture examples such as the brick church on Meeting House Road which still stands today

In 1898–99 a large stone fountain known as "The Fountain" was built on South Street between Main and Water Streets in honor of Commodore George Dewey's visit to the town during his Commanding Officer's Course at UMass Amherst College (now Amherst University). The granite base has a cast iron frieze depicting scenes from American history: a grapevine reaching for heaven; soldiers under General Washington; sailors offloading goods at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; men上ting hay bales from an agricultural plantation; women spinning yarn near their homes; children playing by the harbor side.
