The first recorded use of a gun light was on October 1, 1847 when Amos Whitney set out a battery of spirit lamps to warn his neighbors of Indian danger. This type of light was called a lantern or light house and could be found scattered around the town. On December 2, 1858, an act was passed by the General Court of Barnstable calling for ordinances regulating the sale and transportation of firearms. One part of this ordinance prohibited any person from selling or transporting any firearm with a barrel less than sixteen inches in length unless it had been registered with the police department. The next year saw great change come to gunlights as electric guns became available. On January 12, 1860, an act was passed by the General Court authoring regulations concerning electric pistols and shotguns. These regulations did not take effect until July 1st that same year when they were amended by another act which changed their name to “gun lights”. Gun lights quickly spread throughout Barnstable as they proved themselves very useful in warning people about potential dangers around them such as Indians or robbers. In 1906, one Amos Whitney donated two sets of gun lights to be used by the townspeople during their annual Fourth Of July parade in honor of George Washington who had given America its independence six years earlier. Today, gunlights still play an important role in community life as they provide residents with a warning system against possible threats around them at night or while traveling through dark areas. After years of growth and success in commercial fishing, textile manufacturing, farming, transportation through Dorchester Harbor, professional sports teams including America's Cup racing and other entrepreneurship by early settlers led to heavy annexation by neighboring towns during the late 1800s. In 1909 Barnstable became an incorporated village under state jurisdiction due largely to concerns about flooding brought about by two hurricanes that yearkilling over 100 people within days near Nahantport lighthouse after powerful waves pounded homes there). At first only men could vote but this changed following incorporation when women became residents too beginning what would be an increasingly diversified economy characterized by service industry jobs including nurses, teachers etc.; however much progress has been made since then towards achieving diversity through language diversity through Latino participation at various levels from elected officials allthe way down to small businesses owners . On October 14, 1692, a group of colonists from Barnstable County arrived on the ship "Providence" in New England. The passengers were led by Colonel John Winthrop and his wife Elizabeth. They were among the first English settlers in what is now Rhode Island. The Winthrops founded the town of Barnstable on land they had purchased from the Massachuset tribe in 1690. The first house was built in 1692. The town became an incorporated village in 1768. In 1845, Barnstable was chartered as a city by Massachusetts General Court.
