The first Europeans to visit what is now Barnstable were two Frenchmen who went ashore on Cape Cod in 1620. They named it "Barcoste" for a small bay near where they landed. In 1775, during the American Revolution, Colonel John Adams of Framingham set off from Barnstable with 20 men to build a fortification called Mount Vernon on behalf of George Washington at Portsmouth Plantation on Martha's Vineyard Sound. At Portsmouth Plantation there was also an English settlement founded by Captain Samuel Pepys in 1724 which later became known as Windsor Castle; this early settlement was destroyed by the British in 1776 during the Battle of Bunker Hill when Patriot militiamen under General John Burgoyne captured Fort Ticonderoga and burned most of Pepys' village including his house and stores situated onitanship land east of Princeton Road (now Meetinghouse Hill) northeast of present-day downtown Barnstable. After centuries as part of Plymouth County, Barnstable became part of Massachusetts in 1802 when Worcester County was created from parts of Middlesex and Suffolk counties. The first post office was established here on October 12th, 1802. Barnstable has experienced many transformations over its history: In 1814 it had only 6 residents; 10 years later it had over 80; 30 years after that it had 400; 50 years after that it had 2000; 100 years after that it has 10 thousand residents! Today there are more than 11 thousand residents living in just 7 townships composing Barnstable: Wellesley/Easton/Andover/Northampton/Worcester/Lincoln/Salem/Rehoboth Beach!
