Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 4,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in Barnstable were three families from Ipswich, Suffolk, who arrived in 1636 and built the first house on what is now Main Street. They named their settlement after Barnstaple in England where they had been born. The town's first pastor was Rev. John Wheelock (1659-1725). In 1712, a group of farmers led by Ebenezer Denny established a school for children on present-day School Street. In 1764, General John Adams had his Headquarters here during his tour of America as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army; and while here he ordered that the town be rebuilt following its damage by British artillery during the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1875, when Plymouth County was divided into two parts, Barnstable became one half of new Townshend County which included much of modern day Quincy and North Quincy. In 1916–1917 residents raised $2 million to purchase land at Sandwich Point for an airfield which would become Dow Air Force Base; they named it after Congressman Winthrop Aldrich (D-MA) who had played a leading role in helping to get it done. During World War II many people worked at Naval Air Station Groton Bay which was located about twelve miles northwest of Barnstable center on Long Island Sound; many local men went off to fight overseas including Admiral Chester Nimitz (USN). On July 3rd 1942 USAAF pilot Curtis LeMay flew his B-29 Superfortress "Hornet" from NAS Groton Bay northeast over Cape Cod Heathcock Airport just east ofBarnstable Center destroying both runways with incendiary bombs killing all 21 aboard including seven members of the local community'someness committee which consisted mostly elderly women and children living near the airport who were unable or unwilling to leave their homes without their parents or guardians with them; this event remains known as "The Day After". Many locals helped clean up aftermaths such as removing downed trees and limbs etc.; this typeofOperation has come to be known as ""Green Thumbs"" days because so many locals helped out without receiving any recognition from either government or military authorities
The town of Barnstable was settled in 1634 by the Pilgrims. The first house in the town was built by Capt. John Winthrop. In 1794, Barnstable was incorporated as a village and in 1847, it became a town.
