The Barnstable Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The club is the oldest continuously operating shooting and hunting organization in Barnstable County. pistol shooting began at the club on October 15, 1892 with a single-shot muzzleloader competition. In 1896, the club hosted its first Trap Shooting Contest, which resulted in a win by Club member John F. Weems over local competitor George Wigglesworth. Starting in 1898, the club sponsored an annual rifle match between Barnstable Rifle Association members and other towns in Barnstable County. From 1902 to 1912, theBarnstable Pistol Club also held its own Annual Horse Show that attracted attention from throughout Massachusetts. In 1916, the club moved to its present location at 5 Dartmouth Street and continued sponsoring rifle matches as well as horse shows until it disbanded in 1973 due to lack of membership. Today, membership for both pistol clubs is open to anyone who is interested in firearms sportsmanship and culture within Barnstable County!

The town was first settled in 1630 by Pilgrims who left England for what was then known as New England. The name "Barnstable" comes from the Old English bærngate meaning "a promontory." This word became associated with the harbor at Mystic Valley where farmers could dry their crops and load them on boats for shipment to other parts of America. The first courthouse in Barnstable was built in 1738 and it served until 1825 when a new courthouse was built on the current site. In 1851, Barnstable's only school opened and it closed in 1902. In 1870, Rev. John Eliot began preaching at an old Native American burial ground located near present-day North Beach Road and Center Street. He called this location "Dover". Reverend Eliot became known as one of America's most influential religious leaders during his time here in Barnstable. In 1907, the town voted to become a city and it did so in 1912 with a population of 914 people. The following year saw the opening of what would be known as one of America's most famous shopping centers - South Department Stores - which still operates today as Macy's store on Center Street between Commercial Drive and King St.. As more people moved into the town over time, social services were needed to deal with all aspects of their lives such as schools, churches (both Protestant and Catholic), transportation needs (the famous bus system that circulated through town) etc., which led to formation of various civic organizations such as Keep our Community Alive Incorporated (now known as Towne Services).
