The town was platted in 1795 by Captain Jonathan Grew and Dr. Samuel Warren as part of Plymouth Colony's effort to populate new land beyond Narragansett Bay. In 1831, Barnstable became the first incorporated town in Massachusetts when it voted to become a city. It did so on April 20th, 1831 under the name of "Plymouth". On October 1st of that year, Boston awarded Barnstable cityhood retroactive to September 15th which made it the third municipality (after Quincy and Worcester) in New England after Boston and Hartford. The growth of the suburbs of Plymouth had little impact on the way life changed for residents of Barnstable until after World War II when aluminum production moved into the area resulting in an increase in traffic congestion on Route 128 between Manchester and Brockton MA Climate change has arrived as well with rising sea levels making beaches more inaccessible due to wave erosion AARP also reports that climate change could lead to increased demand for energy from wind turbines as well as changes across industries such as manufacturing

Barnstable is located on the eastern coast of Cape Cod and is bordered to the north by the town of Hyannis and to the east by Falmouth. The town's name comes from a James Barnet place called Barnette. The first European settlers in what is now Barnstable were Dutch people who arrived in 1630. A chapel was built there in 1634, but it burned down in 1635. For many years after that, the only place Europeans could worship was at sea because of persecution from Puritans in England. In 1794, an act was passed giving Barnstable land for a public square and library. In 1812, while fighting with Britain during the War of 1812, American General John Brown captured Fort Warren near present-day Needham Heights in what is now Falmouth. As part of his surrender agreement, Brown agreed to deliver up all arms and munitions to British commanders within 24 hours or he would be shot as an ignominious traitor responsible for starting this war!Barnstable had been one of those towns exempted from local military service due to its lack of fortifications! The town center is located on the southern edge of the town and includes most of its infrastructure. It straddles the border of Plymouth and East Barnstable counties. The area that would become Barnstable was first settled by people from Lynn in 1638. In 1723, Barnstable was incorporated as a separate township within Plymouth county. The township's first mayor was John Winthrop (1624-1702). In 1821, part of what would become Amherst Township became part of Barnstable when it merged with other parts of Plymouth county to form this new municipality. On July 26, 1792, during the American Revolutionary War, Captain Jonathan Sumner led an attack against British forces near present-day Long Point on Cape Cod island. Sumner's forces were successful in driving the British out and capturing their supplies before retreating back to Narragansett Bay. This event is known as "the Battle of Long Point". The first post office for Barnstable opened in 1801; it closed due to Congregationalist religious beliefs not wanting to tacitly recognize state churches at that time. Cape Cod Railroad arrived in 1825 and soon after began serving as a transportation backbone for eastern Massachusetts coastal towns such as Barnstable et al., interconnecting them with New England ports like Ipswich and Boston via water routes bypassing Cape Cod proper
