Barnstable is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,713 at the 2010 census. The name means "farmstead of the barns". Barnstable's ZIP code is 02411. The community sat on an island until it was drained by the Mill River in 1829 and then by the Merrimack River in 1844. It became part of Hampshire County when it was formed from parts of Middlesex and Norfolk counties. The first settler in what is now Barnstable was Nathaniel Dennison who arrived there with his family in 1636. He named his property "New Plymouth" after England's New Plymouth Colony which he had seen on his trip to that country two years earlier. Dennison's son John built a house on what is now Main Street in 1638 and called it "Northampton". NorthamptonShipping Company used this house as its headquarters until 1795 when it moved to Swampscott. In 1796, Daniel Defoe bought land near present-day South Station Road for $675 and started to build a small plantation called Netherfield on which he lived until his death in 1799. In 1800, Philip Willetts purchased 8 acres (3 ha) east of where today's Middle Road meets North Station Road from Daniel Defoe for $1,000 and began to develop it into a small town called Barnstable Village which he named after himself and his wife Hannah Barnet (née Pembroke). On July 24, 1800, voters passed a ballot measure calling for the erection of a courthouse, school system and other public works within four years or else they would be dissolved without notice! When not needed or too expensive to carry out immediately (e.g., building new churches), these goods were put off until later when more money could be saved up! On October 15th 1802 during George Washington's Farewell Address he mentioned that if America could succeed she should establish another colony somewhere! Four days later while traveling through New Bedfordshire Province he stopped at Lowellsburgh Point on Cape Cod where Governor Dummer said "I have lately been much exercised about some matters relating to our future state; I am induced also to think that we may with propriety establish ourselves upon an Island near the coast hereabouts." This led him directly to thinking about establishing a small settlement on an island near Boston Harbor! After consulting with friends he chose Barnstable as the site for this new venture! After almost one year of hilly terrain making good locations difficult to find even with aerial photography (!), Colonel Israel Putnam finally found suitable ground just south of present day Middle Road & East Street between Pond Brook & Woolwich riverside Creek on November 20th 1803 while surveying Route 1A down Route 2A across Route 3A from modern day North Station Rd & Middle Rd all the way back upNH 9TUS 100004
