Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,291 at the 2010 census. The town center is located on the eastern shore of Provincetown Harbor. The original name of Barnstable was "Plymouth", which was given to it by the native Indians. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Barnstable were two brothers, John and Peter Maynard, who came from England in 1624. They named their settlement after Sir William Barnet, an English gentleman who had arrived in Plymouth about that time. The first permanent settler in what is now Barnstable was Nicholas Wright, who moved from Ipswich into Plympton with his family in 1639. He built a house on the corner of South Main and Northampton Streets and named it Wright's Point after himself and his brother-in-law Nicholas Perkins. In 1645, George Fenway moved to Farmington with his wife Mary and their four children; he named the farm land around Little Compton Street after them. In 1748, Captain John Smith traveled through Plympton Valley on his way to build a trading post at modern day Portsmouth (now Fall River). When he reached Wright's Point he noted that there were no houses or other buildings there as compared to other settlements he had passed through. This led him to believe that some people may have been living here anonymously for years before finally settling down." Smith also mentioned that there were no fish stocks available so he requested permission from Governor Thomas Hutchinson to build Fort Snelling on Cape Cod instead near where General John Forbes had built Fort Ticonderoga about two years earlier." However this request was not granted because of cost concerns". In 1749 Captain John Smith returned home and visited Plymouth again before continuing up the Fox River valley and reaching present day Pembroke Plantation on October 24th where he left behind seeds for potatoes which would become one of the largest potato crops ever grown outside of Europe." By 1750 most of what is today Plymouth had developed including Barnstable with its three small villages: East Village (founded by Nicholas Wright), West Village (founded by Isaac Van Cleave) and Northampton (founded by Revd Samuel Adams). On March 14th 1751 Colonel Robert Treatner landed at Falmouth harbor with 22 men aboard HMS Dragonfly under Rear Admiral Jonathan Cotesby during King George II's War when British forces successfully repelled an attempted landing at Hinghambayou by French forces commanded by Pierre Duguay de L’Isle alias Pontchartrainieux just south of modern day Portsmouth" Aftermath: "Duguay de L’Islepiracy resulted in 10 casualties among 20 troops when they encountered heavy fire from militia troops commanded by Lt Col David Howe ... upon disembarking they discovered fresh water only a few rods below tide mark but having advanced several rods towards it they found a deep creek perfect for boats ... knowing that this place would afford shelter from pursuit they accordingly camped near its mouth...At dawn next morning [March 15th] finding all night long their enemies still inactive within easy distance they started forward unprovided with arms except six shotguns which lay ready against any danger should such an attack occur ..." Aftermath: "...the killed being scattered over some parts about 2 miles square; part lay contiguous unto each side of the stream bed whence it flowed into another larger body nearly opposite its mouth; these parts forming thus an extenuating circumstance since no living beings could be seen or touched among those killed...It appears highly improbable that any human life was lost hereabouts durst we make use thereof as evidence against our adversaries" .... Captained John Smith presented His compliments to General James Clinton while quartered at Hinghambayou dated Mar 15th 1751 On March 14th 1751 during King George II's War HMS Dragonfly under Rear Admiral Jonathan Cotesby successfully repelled an attempted landing at Hinghambayou by French forces commanded by Pierre Duguay de L'Isle alias Pontchartrainieux just south of modern day Portsmouth

Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,992 at the 2010 census. The town was chartered on April 25, 1692, by Governor John Winthrop. It became a part of the new Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1782. The first settler in what is now Barnstable was Nicholas Thacher who arrived in 1692 from England and named his tract "Thacher's Land". He built a small cabin on the site which still stands today. In 1756, Reverend Samuel Adams founded an agricultural school here for students in local churches and barns for teaching children farming techniques. In 1814-1815, General Nathaniel Hawthorne and his troops were stationed here during their march to Springfield. In 1852-1853 a railroad extension was constructed through Barnstable including land that now forms the eastern boundary of Plymouth County. This made it possible for people to start buying land outside of Plymouth County and helped increase the population of Barnstable from about 350 residents in 1800 to over 2,000 by 1850. At this time many businesses were started along with several homes being built on Main Street including one called the "Queen's Hotel". During World War II most of the mills within miles of Boston closed due to bombardment damage but some still continued until early 1945 when they turned off all power due to shortages caused by war production interruption factors like fuel rationing etc.. After the war there was heavy population growth as veterans returned home and started anew with young families moving into these vacated mills towns such as Lowell (now Somerville), Billerica (now Amherst), Northampton (now North Attleboro), Mashpee (Now Falmouth) etc.. However much less residential development took place because incentives were given to stay put rather than move out onto open acreage or leave behind high housing costs associated with suburbia lifestyle at that time
The town of Barnstable was settled in 1630, and became a part of Massachusetts in 1692. The first settler in the town was John Winthrop. In 1812, the town voted to become a state capital.
