Barnstable, Massachusetts is a town in the state of Massachusetts. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census, up from 8,934 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-Monson region. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as Mount Hope because of its natural harbor and fertile soil. In 1851 it became a separate municipality under the name of Barnstable village. On July 1, 1974, it merged with neighboring Maynard to form what is now called Barnstable County. The town has three elementary schools and one high school; all are public schools run by Barnstable Towne School District #5 (a member of Boston Common School District). There are also two churches within the town limits: First Baptist Church in Mount Hope and Congregational Church in Northampton. The townsfolk have their own police department which covers both civil and criminal investigations; however, this service is shared by both villages together as part of an agreement made between them when they were merged into Barnstable County.
