The town was first settled in 1634 by Puritan pioneers from Charlestown, Rhode Island. The town's history begins with the founding of Attleboro by colonists from Charlestown on July 24, 1634. At that time, it was located on the banks of the Mystic River and consisted of only a few small settlements. In 1795, Attleboro became part of Worcester County and then Middlesex County when those counties were created from parts of Providence and Worcesteradas following the Great Awakening in America. In 18th century Attleboro had two churches – one built in 1796 and another built in 1800 – as well as a schoolhouse and several other buildings including an assay office which served as court house for many years until 1830s when the courthouse was moved to Boston. In 1821-22 William Perkins donated land to build a public square between Main Street (now Meeting Street) north and South streets east where stands today's park named after him (Perkins Square). On this square he erected three large granite pillars which are still standing today: One commemorates his gift to the town; another marks where he sold his land; and finally a third pillar marks where he died some years later after long efforts to bring about development within his gift boundaries which ultimately failed due to opposition from nearby townships such as Quincy (which also claimed tracts of Perkins Square).
