The first permanent settler in Attleboro was John Winthrop, who arrived in 1636 and built the first house on what is now Main Street. Zephaniah Swift of Worcester gave the town its first public meeting held on April 10 at the home of Mrs. Hannah Bagley-Boothman; this act marked the start of Attleboro's growth as a commercial center with homes and businesses lining both sides of Town street since that time. Attleboro became part of Middlesex County on December 15, 1919 when it was merged into that county along with WestFIELD Shopping Center (now part of Harvard University) and EastFells Shopping Center (now part of Northeastern University). Attleboro has experienced some significant economic changes throughout its history including an increase in manufacturing during World War II while also witnessing a rise in service industry businesses such as health care and software companies during the late 20th century; however, most recently there has been an increased focus on downtown redevelopment which has led to more storefronts being opened up as well as new housing developments across from Main Street along Northampton Avenue between Pittsfield Road and Walnut Hill Road.
