Attleboro, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1620 by John Attleborough and his wife Mary Smeaton. The Attleboroughs were among the original settlers of Boston. In 1722, John's brother-in-law Samuel Adams moved to Attleboro from Lexington, Kentucky and became one of its first residents. In 1825, Griggstown bought land near Attleboro for $2 per acre (U.S.). This led to the name "Griggstown." The town began to grow rapidly and by 1835 had a population of about 100 people; it reached its peak in 1850 with a population of over 500 people. However, due to heavy industry growth and migration from rural areas into downtown Attleboro during this time period, the population declined rapidly after 1850 until it reached its current level in 1910. The Town Hall was built in 1865 by Ebenezer Strong as a replacement for an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire five years earlier. It is still used today as the town hall offices and is also home to the local library system and several other municipal buildings such as courtrooms and school buildings. Attleboro has two churches: First Baptist Church which was built c 1870 on Meeting House Square across from Old High School; Second Presbyterian Church which was built c 1924 on State Street between Main Street (now Dexter Avenue) & Maple Street (now Park Ave). Both churches are within walking distance of each other although they have different denominations but share common services including baptisms/burials/ communions etc., both are open Monday through Saturday 9am - 5pm

Attleboro was first settled as an Indian village on the shores of Narragansett Bay by Miantonomi and Wampanoag Indians in 1634. The town was platted in 1768 by Peterborough trader Nathaniel Bowdoin. In 1827, Attleboro became a consolidated village with North Attleboro and South Attleboro. The town's first school opened in 1768 and served students from north to southbound on Meeting Street between King and Dartmouth Avenues. A second school opened on Market Street in 1827; it operated until 1862 when it burned down. A third school opened on Park Avenue west of Center Road in 1870-71; it operated until 1978 when it closed due to declining enrollment. In 1836, John Fenton donated land for a college which would become Harvard University; the college opened its doors in 1837 and soon began offering degrees beyond those offered by other universities at that time. In 1861, Boston & Maine Railroad bought the school's shares for $50 cash; Harvard continued to offer degrees through BUA until 1971 when MIT took over operations of BUA's schools Group I (the original Attleboro School) and Group II (Westfield Academy). In 1830s-1840s Attleboro had two churches: one Congregationalist and one Baptist/ Methodist/ Episcopal respectively On July 15th 1840 Reverend Amos Chandler preached an open house sermon denouncing Mormonism before 775 people who attended church services held outdoors at Northampton Common near present day Randolph Rd.. After this event local Baptists split off into their own group known as "Methodist Episcopal Church Atteborough" or MEAC for short This church building still stands today across from the old post office next to Ebenezer High School
