Scope mounts originated in Attleboro, Massachusetts in the early 1800s. These devices allowed farmers and hunters to place a telescope on a pole or post for viewing. The first scope mount was made by Samuel Wigglesworth and was known as the Wigglesworth Telescope Mount. This device consisted of a sturdy tripod with two legs that were connected by a hinge. The telescope could be rotated to view different parts of the world. In 1824, John Fenton created the Fenton Telescope Mount which used an innovative design called the V-Mount. This mount featured four legs that were attached to each other at four points instead of just two like the Wigglesworth Telescope Mount did. This gave the Fenton Telescope Mount much more stability and it was able to withstand greater forces than earlier scope mounts. In 1830, Ebenezer Howard invented and built the Howard Telescope which used an air-filled barrel to support the telescope instead of using a tripod like most other telescopes at that time. This allowed for greatly increased magnification potential and helped make astronomy one of America's favorite hobbies. During World War II, many American businesses became interested in helping supply food supplies to troops overseas through their subsidiaries abroad such as Bendix Corporation who supplied optics for military riflesights before they became available in North America commercially (Bendix Optical Company). At this time, Scope Mfg., Incorporated was founded with production sites located in Attleboro, MA (Scopes) and Reading, PA (Scope Mfg.). Attleboro, MA is a town located in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The population was 8,585 at the 2000 census. It is the largest town in Plymouth County and the second largest town in Massachusetts after Boston. The old Attleboro village site was situated on the east side of the river near present-day Attleboro Junction. In 1793, when Attleboro became part of Plymouth County, it had a population of 1,200. After increasing influxes of Irish immigrants during the 18th century and early 19th century, the population reached 10,000 by 1800. The first store in Attleboro opened in 1789 and by 1831 there were six stores and nine hotels in town proper. By 1860 there were thirteen stores and twenty-one hotels; most businesses were engaged in cattle or farming activities but one hotel was used as a public library until 1892. Attleboro experienced rapid growth during its post-revolutionary period as opportunities for trade increased with new markets opening up along with transportation improvements such as canals and railways that made goods available to a wider audience than ever before. This prosperity led to an increase in housing prices which helped drive out many of the original settlers who had preferred subsistence farming techniques over large-scale industry.
