It lies on the edge of Ipswich Township and Islip Townships. The first recorded reference to Attleboro can be found in 1635 when it was called "Attellborough". In 1654, Samuel Pepys referred to it as "Attleborowe". By 1701, Attleboro had a population of 1,500 and by 1736 it had increased to 5,000. In 1810 the village became an incorporated town under the name of Attleboro. In 1837-38 services were provided by Rev. Jabez Bowen for $2 per week from his home at 7 New Market Place; however this service ended due to financial difficulties and Bowen's death 3 weeks later. A new service began on October 2nd 1840 with Revd John Fenton providing services for $4 per week from his home at 190 Main Street until his death in 1845 - also this service ended after a short time due to financial problems.. On November 25th 1861 during the American Civil War Confederate General Robert E Lee advanced across Worcester County into Suffolk County and attacked Union forces at Battle of White Sands (now known as Southampton). While fighting in front of what is now downtown Attleboro many soldiers were killed including Private First Class Nathaniel Purdy who died while helping clear earthworks around battle ground where he would later be buried according to Revolutionary War tradition. contemporary reports state that Private Purdy “was shot through both legs below the knee” within seconds after taking up arms against his enemy and thus fell victim not only to an enemy fire but also direct human inflicted injury or even murder! This particular episode has long been celebrated as one of America’s earliest military engagements with consequent Lost Cause mythology surrounding it which still persists today among some residents & visitors alike! A children's book about Nathaniel Purdy was published in 1929 called "Nathaniel's Own History" written by Mildred Sayers Bullock In 1930 Reverend Jabez Bowen formed another type of religious organization called The Second Adventists which performed baptisms in water rather than attending church services weekly like other denominations did then- Reverend Bowen believed that baptism could take place immediately after conversion rather than over time like other Baptists did...they soon disbanded because their members couldn't agree on how they should administer baptism...theaters were built near main street so people could watch Reverend Jabez baptize babies etc etc Newspapers reported about these groups occasionally during this time too but no evidence exists that any actually happened
