The Town of Attleboro was founded in 1729 by settlers from Connecticut and Rhode Island. The first house in town was built on High Street by Captain John Winthrop. In 1735, the town granted land to Colonel Samuel Maverick for his plantation near modern-day Attleboro. The village of Attleboro grew up around this plantation until it merged with the larger town in 1892. Attleboro became an incorporated municipality on April 14, 1892. The original town meeting minutes show that William L’Enfant recommended incorporation because "a proper government can be had only where there are inhabitants." In 1916–17, the New England Municipal League offered $10,000 to help finance a new school building and attract teachers to Attleborough; but no one responded so the offer lapsed. Attleborough voters approved a bond issue for a new high school in 1944 which replaced what had been an academy/Junior High School since 1892 (the old high school had been destroyed by fire). The present high school building opened in 1951. In 1970–71, approximately $5 million were spent on renovation of all buildings within the municipal limits including: replacement of windows and roofing throughout municipally owned buildings; installation of energy-saving features such as low pressure sodium lighting throughout municipally owned buildings; and purchase or lease of vehicles equipped with air conditioning or heat pumps instead of traditional gasoline engines and oil delivery systems

Attleboro (also spelled Attleborough) is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Middlesex–Bedford, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Captain John Attleborough and his family who settled there in 1713. Attleboro was first settled by farmers and early traders from England in the late 18th century. In 1825, the town became an incorporated village and remained so until it merged with Worcester in 1959. The town's name comes from its original location on "Attlesborough Hill", which overlooks the towns of Worcester and Middlesex. After the American Revolutionary War, many British soldiers were discharged or left America to return home. Some of these soldiers founded new settlements throughout what is now Massachusetts; some such as Captain John Attleborough established themselves permanently in eastern Essex County while others such as Nathaniel Palmer moved westward over time to establish villages such as North Reading and Hatfieldtowne. In 1713, Captain John Attleborough arrived in what is now Attleboro with his family after migrating from Hampshire County, England. He built a small house on "Attlesborough Hill" near where he would live until his death in 1798. At that time, most of modern-day Essex County was rural farmland with few permanent residences other than those located along major highways or along rivers for transportation purposes only - not for farming purposes like Attleboro did at that time. The early settlers had difficulty finding enough land to build their homes due to lack of available resources and competition from other landowners who had more land which they could use for farming or housing development instead of giving it away to those who had origins from elsewhere in Europe or North America . However, over time more people began moving into this area due to expanding industry within nearby Worcester and Middlesex Counties as well as increased opportunities for trade within both regions thanks to open water access through Long Island Sound which made shipping goods between New England and points north much easier than it had been before Confederation (the United States formed on July 4th, 1781). However because much of this area still relied heavily upon agriculture as its primary economic activity (based primarily around raising livestock), much progress has yet to be made towards developing this sector despite numerous efforts by residents over several decades – including a failed effort by then Mayor Joseph Amedeo Raposo to develop a heavy industrial park adjacent to downtown during his administration in the 1990s prior thereto; however current efforts are underway including plans for an urban rail line running through downtown via side streets) . Despite this long journey upriver & many obstacles faced along the way – including being platted without any local input & opposition from wealthier landowners – Captains John Attleborough & Nathaniel Palmer's successors continued To promote settlement hereabouts (& eventually helped lay down present day streetscape) ). This resulted today’s prosperous community we know today!

This made it an ideal place to find new business opportunities and make money. Additionally, it became a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful scenery and historical attractions. In 1868, however, Attleborough began experiencing some rapid growth due to new industrialization in nearby Somerville Heights. This led to increased traffic congestion and a rise in noise levels within the town center. As a result, many residents decided to move out of town altogether and form their own villages around Attleborough - which is why there are only a few remaining original buildings from earlier times left in thetown today!
