The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as part of what would become Plymouth Colony. In 1821 it became part of Massachusetts as part of the Townshend Act which merged multiple towns into a single entity. The name "Attleboro" honors John Attlee, then Secretary of State under George Washington who served as Secretary from 1797 to 1800 and 1801 to 1802. A post office called Attleboro was established in 1795, and remained in operation until 1865. Attleborough Manor was built between 1798 and 1800 by Samuel Munroe for his son-in-law Edward Stacy who had married Stacy's daughter Deborah Wayland. It is a reconstruction of an early mansion dating back to 1638 that stands today on Meeting Street in downtown Attleboro. In 1830, Ebenezer Howard built a small cotton gin on his farmstead near modern day Interstate 93 north of town; this began industrialization nearby with other farmers starting to produce goods such as flour and soap with their own cotton fields around this time which helped spur development along I-93 corridor.. In 1850s another entrepreneur named Asa Briggs started developing land east of I-93 near modern day Swampscott Road/Route 3 for housing purposes; this led to increased growth east of I-93 over time with some commercial buildings being built such as Briggs Brewery (now Baxter's Brewing) circa 1870.. This period also witnessed some significant cultural changes including blacks beginning attend local schools through selective integration efforts begun by President James Kapp during his administration starting circa 1860.. In 1902 Elisha Stevens opened Brown Brothers & Co., one of America's largest retail grocers serving both rural residents and urbanites throughout New England; this helped spur further growth along Route 3 across town towards present day Wachusett Highway.. By 1910 Attleborough had reached its peak population numbering 15 people per square mile with 1,500 residents inside its borders making it one of the most heavily populated places within either side of state lines at that time – although only about 60% white... In 1916 during World War I much progress was made when many large manufacturing plants were closed or moved away due to wartime production shortages… However after hostilities ended there were corresponding declines in business activity which led to a decrease in population from 20 people per square mile prewar TO just 10 people per square mile following 1945.. A new shopping center called First Congregational Church Shopping Center opened adjacent to Main Street 101st Avenue Extension shortly before its closure (2002) followed by demolition (2005) leaving only foundations remaining today... Thereafter little redevelopment took place until 2003 when plans emerged for revitalization including construction Of A New School District Headquarters Facility On Route 3 And First Congregational Church Boulevard Within Sight Of Original Property resulted In Present Day Development Called "Attleborough Square".
