Attleboro is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,827 at the 2010 census. Established in 1785 as Attleborough, the town became Attleboro Junction in 1855 and again Attleboro in 1915. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Attleboro was originally settled by English colonists on peas growing land that they acquired from Native Americans near present-day Exeter. In 1785, when Attleborough was first established, it consisted of just two houses and thirteen families; today it has a population of over 10,000 people and includes portions of South Hadley and Needham townships. The early settlers were primarily fishermen who grew crops for local consumption and sold their products through village stores or directly to customers on the wharf at Walthamport (now Quincy). By 1800, there were three farms within sight of the harbor—one owned by John Barnstable, one by Jonas Alden and one by George Everett—and fishing became an important source of income for many residents. In 1802, Anthony Burgess purchased a saltworks at Ipswich Point from Samuel Adams which helped make Attleborough an important salt market for local merchants and sailors throughout New England. The town's first store opened in 1807 on Meeting Street with goods bought fresh from Ipswich Point dockyards where salt was unloaded onto ships bound for Narragansett Bay. The commercial success of the saltworks led to increased demand for housing in Attleborough since most residents worked outside the family home or rented subsistence space inside larger homes built during this period around Meeting Street (later Northgate Square), Seaport Road (later Main Street), Wellesley Avenue (later Beacon Hill) and other squares located along what is now Route 128 (then called Essex/Middlesex Turnpike). One example of such a large house built during this time can be found at 9 Union Road which once served as both a grocery store and dwelling for twenty-six families before being gutted brick shell after fire destroyed most of it in 1960 following neighborhood protests against proposed building permits that would have allowed high-density development without public access to open space including streetscape enhancements proposed by then Mayor Ralph Nader . After years of debate among community members about whether or not to allow high-density development within walking distance of schools serving low income neighborhoods adjacent to shopping malls anchored by Sears & Kmart developments promoted as "the future" due to impending job growth spurred by President Obama's stimulus package available only through approved developers' consents - culminating with passage by voters in November 2009 via referendum ballot question - City planners resurrected plans to demolish nine Union Road dwellings – all but two still extant - because they considered them aesthetically unappetizing compared to contemporary buildings nearby that had been completely rehabilitated following prior community protests against similar proposals dating back more than 20 years! A new zoning proposal allowing up to four story buildings with roofs above street level wasn't reinstated until 2017 following opposition resulting from concerns about potential displacement related businesses currently occupying large blocks across several streets adjacent to current day Billerica square where high density development is planned if approved - coincidentally also centered around former site occupied by nine demolished Union Rd dwellings prior thereto! In 1853, when Attleboro Junction was created dueto changes brought about by railroad construction traveling southward from Springfield via Amherst Junction into Middlesex County,[1] much attention turned towards developing what would become known as "Attleeown". At first glance it appeared that nearly everyone living within reason distanceof thence wanted nothing more than annexation into the burgeoning city center; however few actually obtained deeds or voted on annexation requests.[2][3] By 1860 only six families resided within reasonable Driving Distanceof Boston proper while almost halfpipe inhabitants residing eastward along Watertown line desired annexation too![4][5] initial efforts made toward annexing these scattered communities failed due To lack Of unanimity amongst residents over proposed boundaries&opposition frm various quartersamong themselves: businessmen (& women?), farmers?, firefighters?
