That same year also saw an Odd Fellows Lodge No 1 being erected here (the only one existing in Agawam until 1954). Today this lodge continues to serve as an important source of support for local charities both inside and outside of the village core... The Route 128 intersection just east of downtown served as an important stop on New England mail routes during colonial times before becoming less important after Connecticut joined Confederation in 1803...roads connecting eastern Massachusetts with Rhode Island were cut through what is now Agawam shortly after Connecticut's joining...the last stagecoach from Worcester arrived here on October 15th 1853 carrying passengers en route to Springfield.. .

A group of Englishmen who had been shipwrecked on Martha's Vineyard chartered an Adventureous Vessel called the Providence on November 4, 1628 with intentions of reaching Boston by September 8th. They reached New York City October 9th after spending three weeks at sealeonading around Cape Horn. They landed on Long Island on October 17th where they met some colonists led by Reverend John Winthrop (1602-1647). One day after landing they set out for what would become Agawam when their boat capsized while exploring what is now Sayville Harbor near West Sayville. All nine men drowned except one Captains Nicholas Goffe (1590-1656) and Isaac Leo (1592-1659), both of whom made it back to shore safely with their supplies and equipment salvaged before winter could prevent them from reaching Boston again The first permanent European settler in Agawam may have been Captain Nicholas Goffe who arrived about Mayflower in 1629 Upon his arrival he built a cabin next to where present day North Avenue meets South Street He soon married Sara Winslowe who came over with him from Ipswich There are several references to Captain Nicholas Goffe throughout early colonial records including indentures which list his wife Sara Winslowe as one of those accompanying him . In addition there are two reports that mention land being sold near present day North Avenue/South street intersection but no record has been found to support this claim . Some say that Captain Nicholas Goffe may have moved into this area because it offered better access to available water resources than adjacent towns such as Salem or Woonsocket . Whatever the case may be , within a few years Captain Nicholas Goffe had created one of the most thriving villages in southeastern Massachusetts It seems that early settlements along Cotton Hill Road were founded by people looking for richer soil than what they could find nearer Salem or Ipswich For many years there was only intermittent farming due to lack of any other suitable land nearby Furthermore, transportation difficulties limited access both ways so goods transported long distances often went unsold This restrictive environment discouraged settlement until new routes opened up during King Philip's War which saw increased traffic between England and New Netherland Although agricultural production slowly improved following Pequot Revolt (1675-76),Error creating thumbnail: Unable to load thumbnail: File not found
