Agawam, Massachusetts (population: 16,837) is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts. The population was 5,985 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was founded by the Puritan settlers John Winthrop and his wife Elizabeth Woolridge in 1736. It was named after Agawam Lake, which lies to the north of the town. In 1768, it became a part of Boston when that city was formed from parts of Roxbury and Dorchester counties. The first white settler in Agawam was Samuel Willard who arrived in 1736 with his family from Rhode Island. The Willards were among the first English settlers to live on what is now known as Main Street in Agawam. They built a small cabin there and many other early families followed suit over time. In 1834, John Eliot purchased land west of present-day downtown Agawam from Stephen Quincy and laid out a township within its limits that same year. Eliot's township included all of what is now eastern Franklin County except for much of central Hampshire County which remained unincorporated until 1874 when it became part of Lynnhaven Township In 1850, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, President James Kapp ordered Ulysses S Grant to liquidate all public lands east of Springfield including all but 1/4 mile (1 km) of arterial road running through Agawam Township proper between Fall River Road (now US Route 9) and White Marsh Road (now NH Route 128). This order outraged many residents because it amounted to confiscation without compensation; some felt that they had been wronged by their government while others viewed it as justly enforcing Indian Removal laws decreed by Congress under Jackson's administration A few years later, President Millard Fillmore rescinded Kapp's order with an Executive Order designed specifically to protect agrarian interests – this Order known as "FILLMORE ORDER" On November 15th1853 two men met at Waltham Common near modern dayWaltham Center to discuss organizing resistance againstGrant’s orders – these men were future leaders Nathaniel Hawthorne and Elijah Parish Howe In 1855 local farmer Josiah Bartlett began selling wheat flour privately across open fields southwest of downtown Agawam thanks largely to support given him by abolitionist group such as Anthony Grimké who toured the area regularly . After hearing about Bartlett’s efforts buy flour for local grocery stores he decided not only did this help Lexington get flour cheaper but also this allowed locals more say in how their money should be spent . On July 10th1857 an act statue called “Bartlett”was erected next doorto Hopkins Hotel on State Street near where Pembroke Avenue meets Federal Highway today

Agawam was a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Puritan settlers in 1635 and incorporated as a village on May 4, 1768. It became a town on July 11, 1820. The name Agawam derives from an Algonquian word meaning "water hole" or "pool." In 1847 the Agawam Railroad was built to carry goods between Boston and Worcester. The railroad bypassed Agawam and continued through Elma to reach Worcester; this made Agawam the first town in Massachusetts to have its own railroad station. It was also instrumental in helping create the state's largest agricultural area; much of what is now Worcester County was developed during this time for growing wheat and other crops along the railroads. In 1916 agribusiness magnate John Doudna bought all of America's interest in General Mills (now JDS Unifinished), one of the world's leading food companies; he merged it with his partner William Hormel into International Harvester Company (IHC). IHC continues to be one of America's largest agricultural conglomerates today. On October 20, 2008 construction began on Interstate 95 through Agawam Township and into Northborough Township which will improve access to Interstate 93 from both sides of downtown Worcester for motorists travelling eastbound or westbound
