On July 1st of that year it had a population of 752 people; by 1990 it had grown to 1205 with a high school located on Main Street which now houses both the town hall building as well as several other buildings such as a library and post office complex. The village continued until 1995 when all but one building within its limits were taken down for use as taxable property by the new town government; this exception being renovations taking place inside the old post office building on Market Street which are now used for public meeting spaces and offices by the Town Council before finally becoming storage space for local businesses once again upon annexation bythe newtown government in 2013-14 According to the 2000 census there was only one business open within “Village” boundaries: Aetna Life Insurance Company with two employees working out of an annex off State Road 9A in what is now known as “Old Town” Annexe. The Town of Agawam was first settled in 1636 by the Rev. John Eliot and his wife Abigail Eliot on land purchased from the Narragansetts. In 1764, it became a separate township and was renamed for General George Washington as part of a system of local name change to commemorate American Presidents. The town's first post office opened in 1768 and closed in 1836; its last official record is from 1852. The town began to prosper due to trade with New York City and London during the early 1800s; however, when railroads were built through central Massachusetts during this time period, Agawam lost much of its commercial importance. However, there has been recent economic growth thanks to several major employers including Roland Aircraft Company (now Boeing), Brooks Brothersie Shoes, NHK-owned TV stations WGBH-TV (channel 4) and WCVB-TV (channel 9), and Weingarten Furniture Company which has headquartered in Agawam since 1977. According to the 2010 US Census estimate, there were 2,824 people living in Agawamtowns—1% more than that counted in 2000 but 3% less than that counted in 1990. The racial makeup of Agawamtowns remained almost evenly split between white residents (81%) and non-white residents (18%). There were also no reported Hispanic or Latino residents living within the town limits at any point during the censuses studied; however Census data does not track ethnicity specifically within towns or villages throughout this country Therefore such information cannot be used to make informed assertions about how demographics have changed over time or what factors might account for these trends
