In 1821, the town became a part of Plymouth County and voted to secede from Massachusetts due to disagreement over taxation policies. In 1837, Agawam annexed land east of its original boundaries to form Northampton Township; this annexation led to friction with Northampton over land titles and other issues. In 1848, the townships were merged into Plymouth County as it expanded westward under state law. Agawam has experienced growth since its incorporation as a town: its population increased from 1,500 in 1990 to 3,400 by 2000 and 4,100 by 2010. The most recent update showed that the population had reached 5,000 residents as of 2019 according to data released by the US Census Bureau

Agawam is a town in Massachusetts, United States. It is the smallest of the seven towns in the town of Wellesley and lies within Wellesley Hillsborough County. The population was 7,613 at the 2010 census. The first people living in Agawam were Native Americans who migrated from Maine around 1636. They changed their name to "Agawam" after one of their villages in that state, Agawam Falls. A post office was established here in 1837, and by 1860 it had a population of 1,500. In 1870, an act provided for incorporation as a village; but because there was already so much land available for settlement, only 8 citizens voted to incorporate as a village and it remained just an agricultural township until 1916 when it became a full-time community with its own police force. In 1916–17 the legislature passed an act providing for electric lights in all townships; this enabled Agawam to become self-sufficient and be designated as the seat of government for Wellesley Hillsborough County instead of being subordinate to Quincy. The current town hall building was built on Main Street in 1964 and has been used as such ever since. The growth of well-to-do residents led to increased demand for services and amenities that made life easier for everyone – including schools, churches, libraries, hospitals and businesses – which eventually led to taxes becoming too high or not enough raised to cover costs associated with keeping these services running effectively. This caused the loss of jobs throughout town during what has come to be known as "the Great Recession" (2008–2010). However, despite these challenges local entrepreneurs have been able to bring new life back into some businesses while still providing essential services like health care through clinics run by professionals like physicians groups or home health workers working part time out of residences while they attend medical school or work full time outside their homes; this type of business model is now being called " mobile medical technology." Today's economy is based on several factors: higher education which continues grow rates due largely to private foundations making investments such as endowed chairs at universities across America; manufacturing jobs moving offshore due increasingly difficult labor conditions abroad (due mainly to automation); tourism giving rise both locally (through events like arts festivals) as well as internationally (Visiting Sam Adams Brewery) making Wellesley Hillsborough County one of North America’s most visited tourist destinations; research institutions bringing visitors together from all over who are seeking knowledge about different countries’ cultures through hands-on experiences - something unique among North American communities By 2030 there will be more than 10 million people living within commuting distance [of Boston] who will make up 50%[of its workforce]; however much larger portion will live outside commuting range because they provide no economic value without access either direct service or affordable housing
