There are also several smaller businesses located throughout the town center including Subway sandwich shops, banks, pharmacies/drugstores, automobiles/tires stores etc., as well as many churches with local congregations active within their ministries such as St Columba's Episcopal Church where services are conducted weekly from 9 am to 7 pm EST; Saint Mary's Catholic Church on Beacon Street near Central Square; Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church on State Street just south of Quincy Market; First Baptist Church on Elm Street north of Main Street; Bethel Baptist church across from MIT open since 1955 According to the 2000 US census there were 4,959 people residing in Agawam proper while 3% lived outside its boundaries including 2% within Beverly Parish east of Agawam Center while 1% resided within Southwick village annexed by Agawam between Newton Corner Road and Route 3A - this latter group numbering 6 households out of a total reported population for that village containing only 266 residents according to the 2000 census results Although commonly considered an agricultural community during much earlier periods due largely to landowning families having used their sizeable holdings for agriculture centuries prior they did begin diverted towards textiles production following World War II especially through later waves immigrants brought over from Hungary textile workers known as "the New Englanders" after nearby Braintree (then Roxbury) where most refugees came
