In 1723, Agawam joined Somerville as one of the townships of Middlesex County. The first white men to live there were Peter Minuit and his family who came from New Netherland and built a small cabin on what is now North Main Street. Agawam, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Agawam" means "water-meadow." The first permanent European settlement in what would become Agawam was made by Samuel Adams and his son-in-law John Winthrop in 1630 as part of the Plymouth Colony. They named their settlement after Sir William Agnew who had been sent as an envoy from England to negotiate trade deals with the Dutch and French. The first settler in what would become Agawam was John Winthrop himself who arrived on July 1, 1630. He built a small cabin on the bank of the cranberry River which he named Poundstone because it resembled a pound weight that he had seen at a British market place. Winthrop died soon after arriving in America and was succeeded by his son Samuels who also died before he could take possession of the land. It wasn't until May 10, 1635 when Nathaniel Eaton came ashore from his ship "Annie" and claimed rights to what became known as "Eaton's quarter", including present day Agawam Village. On December 12, 1636 Eaton married Sara Winslow (daughter of Pocahontas) which led to increased speculation about whether or not Winslow actually descended from Powhatan Chief Jamestowne II (alias Opechancanough). In early January 1637 Eaton received news that Govenolde Vere – one of England's most powerful officials – had landed at Portsmouth with over 100 colonists aboard ship HMS Protector to begin exploration of North America east of Cape Cod. This news created excitement within the Plymouth colony as it showed that they were no longer alone in their efforts to find new land! It wasn't until 1702 that English settlers began arrive in earnest with Doctor Richard Hooker coming ashore at Hingham on Dec 15th for provisions only to find peaceful Indian natives living there already! Soon after this initial influx some men decided they needed more pastureland so they started moving inland along Route 2 into what would become Watertown which became known as Pawtucket later on when that road was relocated closer to where Pawtucket now stands! On October 30th, 1722 General Thomas Gage ordered all outposts within three miles (5 km) of Boston be abandoned without any notice being given to those inside these posts! This order represented an effectively cutoff of English trade with New England; this decision has been blamed for instigating King George's War (1744-47). After several months Of tensions and skirmishes near Boston between Patriot forces led by Colonel John Starkweather and Loyalist troops under General Thomas Gage, King George III called upon Parliamentarians under general Sir Ralph Waldo Emerson to march against Gage’s army at Lexington on April 19th 1745!!! However due lackerve food and fresh water both sides Commit suicide instead!!!!! As a direct resultofthis events many refugees fled across bridges into Rhode IslandandNew York City thereby leadingtothe establishmentofAmerica’s second immigrant group!!
