In 1777, two British soldiers were killed while trying to take over a house in Agawam. This event is often cited as the start of gun sights history in this town.
Agawam is a town on the east bank of the River Haverford in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,567 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite of Agawam first appeared in 1724 as part of what was then Hampshire County and was organized into a town in 1768. The name "Aghwam" means "the place where there are many apple trees." The first settler in Agawam was Nicholas Akeley and his wife Sarah de la Pole. They moved from Wethersfield to Agawam in 1725, shortly after they had married. Their son George Akeley settled here around this time and became one of the most influential citizens of Agawam. In 1801, John Quincy Adams arrived in America and set up his home near present-day Watertown. He soon became an important figure in American politics and served as president from 1809 to 1817. In 1821, he founded Agawams Academy which continues to operate today as one of the leading private schools in America. After years of decline, Farmingdale resident George Weissell developed a significant dairy industry here during the early 20th century; it declined thereafter but Weissell's heirs continue to own much of what remains today including two grocery stores (Weissell's Supermarket and Hannaford) as well as 10 residential properties located on nearly half a mile (1600 m) extending along both sides of Route 8 between Watertown and Westboro Village across from Foxwoods Resort Casino).

After the war, Agawam experienced another decline in its population until it reached its current size in 2000.Agawam is known for its flour mills which have been operated since 1814 and continue to produce quality flour products today. The towns history also includes important accomplishments such as being one of the last municipalities to beincorporated into Massachusetts; as well as having one of the first water systems installed within his municipality
Agawam, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Agawam were the Algonquian-speaking Narragansetts. The first permanent settler was John Eliot who arrived in 1786. He founded the town on land that he had purchased from the Narragansett chief Winihamption. By 1800, there were around 100 people living in Agawam and it had a small school and post office. In 1828, a group of farmers banded together to form the Agricultural Society of New England and bought some of the lots in what is now Agawam from John Eliot. They built a mill which started operating in 1830 and produced flour for local markets as well as exporting to other colonies. In 1847, Amos Eaton became the town's first mayor and served until his death in 1850. Because of this early exposure to outside trade and culture, Agawam grew quickly into one of New England's most important towns during its early years. During World War II, Agawam was an important stop on military supplies going through Connecticut Valley crossings into North America via Route 6
