In 1721, under the leadership of General Thomas Gage during his siege of Fort Ticonderoga, local residents destroyed a large apple orchard near present-day downtown Agawam to prevent British forces from using it for food storage or artillery ammunition. The orchards remain an important part of downtown Agawam today. In 1775, during the American Revolution and prior to Boston's incorporation as a city limits in 1871, much territory including present-day Agawam and areas around Watertown were awarded to Long Island by Congress as part of New York's Boundaries adjustment Act which declared all lands east of Lake George included within Albany County (later Nassau County). However, following Indian removal many settlers moved west into present-day Middlesex County where they developed agrarian society with freehold titles to land until 1800 when control passed through purchase or gift to European Americans by Native Americans following their surrender at Saratoga Springs Convention

Agawam, Massachusetts is a town located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New England metropolitan area. One of the earliest settlements in what became Agawam was founded in 1624 by Captain John Smith and his party on the site of present-day Winthrop. The first white settler in Agawam was John Putnam who arrived in 1710. By 1800, there were 636 residents living here. In 1802, Suffolk County was created from parts of Middlesex and Essex Counties and Agawam became part of that new county. In 1812, a sawmill and gristmill were built here by General David Dixon to help process lumber from the surrounding forested areas into benches and other items for export to Europe. The mills continued to be run until 1917 when they closed due to economic reasons. Today, there are only a few ruins remaining from these earlier days including an old mill dam which still stands tall today; as well as a small park next to it named after General Dixon at 5th Street and River Road
