The town site was surveyed by Samuel Maverick and named for General John Adams (1737-1826), second president of the United States (1797-1800). In 1798, the towns of North Dedham and South Dedham were merged to form Agawam Township. In 1801, two more towns were formed within Agawam Township: North Amherst and South Amherst. On July 1, 1802, Amherst became a city with a population of over 20,000 people. On January 25, 1834, Agawam was incorporated as a village by an act of the Legislature under the name "Aagawa". On February 12th same year it changed its name to "Agawam" after congressmen Jonathan Atherton and Caleb Strong recommended it be so named because there had been much discussion about whether or not to build an academy in that location; on February 15th it changed back again to "Aagawa" after some debate among residents about what should be its full name given that no college had yet been established in America worthy of being called such - this event also marks when townspeople ratified a local custom which allows them to change their names at will if they choose) The post office opened on December 14th 1835 and continued serving until 1958 when it was closed due to lack of interest from customers. At one time there were over 100 residences in the village including many large frame homes built between 1840-1860 which remain standing today; however most have been removed during recent years for demolition or other reasons According to the 2010 US Census there are 3,711 people living in Agawam Village
