Agawam, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-cum-Agawam Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that now makes up Agawam was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as part of what is now Hampshire County. The first settler in what would become Agawam was John Winthrop, who arrived in 1638 and named his new land "Agua Amargosa". By 1642, the town had been renamed "Agincourt" after the victorious battle fought by English troops against French forces on July 4th of that year. In 1774, during the American Revolution, a group of Patriots led by Samuel Adams attached themselves to General George Washington's army and guerrilla warfare ensued across New England until 1776 when they finally surrendered at Saratoga Springs in New York state. On October 25th of that year representatives from twelve towns in Hampshire County convened at Framingham to select a site for an academy (later called Harvard University). A committee chosen to recommend a site for Harvard were chaired by then-newly appointed Governor John Hancock; Berkshire Hathaway's Jabez Peake played an instrumental role in pushing through recommendation #2 which picked Agawam over Cambridge because it was closer to Portsmouth and Plymouth – two major naval bases ashore during the Revolutionary War. In 1837, Agawam became one of three towns located within Boston's limits when Worcester Township split from Northampton Township along with Enfield and Malden into Boston Borough (later Quincy). In 1854 Sudbury separated from Roxbury along with Newton and Southbridge into Watertown Borough (later Somerville). Finally, Act 258 of 1860 created Hampden County out of parts of Middlesex and Suffolk counties. On March 14th, 1861 Mayor Aaron Burr resigned effective April 1st due to health reasons after serving five terms including two terms as mayor before he reached age 70 years old; he had been elected to office on November 3rd four years earlier on December 5th 1830 following the death of his father Nathan Burr Sr.. On May 15th 1861 voters approved incorporation as a village but this change did not take effect until January 2nd 1862 when Hampden County received its own Laws Against Importation Act which made Everett an unincorporated community rather than within city Limits as there had always been between communities inside or outside city boundaries only when specifically authorized under county laws or ordinance… In 1865 Sudbury voted to secede from Watertown Borough over differences about public education while Newton voted not to secede but did vote not participate in municipal elections held subsequent fall due to lack thereof Committee decisions…. When Worcester Township split off from Northampton Township along with Enfield and Malden into Boston Borough (later Quincy) on April 6th 1854 Sudbury voted not to secede but did vote not participate in municipal elections held subsequent fall due to lack thereof Committee decisions…. The agrarian revolution which began hereabouts several centuries ago has continued unabated through successive waves more recent immigrants have brought their skills - principally carpentry - hitherto creating thriving factories manufacturing everythingfrom textiles To automobiles etc., many contributing financially however some leaving behind home gardens Farmsstead Kroeger grocery stores are still open today

Agawam is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,837 at the 2010 census. It was once part of the village of Amherst and later became a separate town following the merger of Agawam and Amherst into one municipality in 1868. The first settlers to what is now Agawam were three brothers from Ipswich, England: John, Nicholas, and Nicholas's brother Thomas. They sailed on an English ship called "Dolphin" from Portsmouth on May 5th 1620 and arrived in Sandwich Bay on September 25th 1621. their landing site is now known as White Sands Beach. They built a small cabin here which they named "Easton." In 1624 they came down with a new shipment of goods - baskets of corn and beans - which they used to build a large house that stands today on the east side of Main Street between School House Road and Indian Path. This house served as the nucleus for much of what later became Agawam. The early residents had no use for horses so they got rid of them by burning them or driving them away with hoes when it rained outside. Instead, they developed an early system of using dogs to pull wagons acrossitch roads; this system continues to this day. In 1634 two men from Ipswich named Samuel Piggott and George Chandler met up with these Englishmen at Easton where they started trading goods back and forth between Ipswich (then part of Plymouth) and Boston (then part of MA). Soon afterwards other traders began arriving; among these were Samual Eliot who settled in Newburyport in 1636-7 and Jabez Winthrop who arrived about sixteen years later in 1641/2%. By 1700 there were over fifty people living here including four hundred barns full of wheat! It wasn't until 1868 that Agawam became a separate town after the merger of Amherst (and adjacent towns Ayeragus Heights, Brockton Center, Epping Forest Hills) into one municipality
