Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Agawam, Massachusetts. The first gun magazine in the town was the "Aurora" in 1857. It was one of the earliest gun stores in town and sold rifles, shotguns, pistols, and other firearms. In 1865, the "Agawam Guardian" started publication and soon became one of the most popular newspapers in Agawam. The paper's editor-in-chief was Captain John W. Fenton who also served as Mayor from 1875 to 1880. The paper had a staff of about 20 people when it started publication and by 1870 it had turned into a weekly journal with a circulation of 100 copies per issue. In 1876, Captain Fenton founded "The Republican" which quickly became one of the most popular newspapers in Agawam. In 1902, Captain Fenton donated his library to Agawam Community College which has been using it ever since as their main library building. TheCaptain's collection of books on guns and related topics is now part of the college's permanent collection. Agawam is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 4,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quincy, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Agawam comes from the Algonquian word anagawa meaning "place where white men live". English colonists named this place after their leader and founder of what would become Boston, Colonel John Winthrop. In 1641 Winthrop purchased land here from the Narragansetts for £2 per acre (about $830/km²). He built a small fort on land that he had recently acquired and named it Fort Constitution. The first European to set foot in Agawam was Captaine John Smith in 1709 with his band of Native Americans. Agawam's growth as a townsite can be traced back to 1812 when selectmen organized a post office and began receiving mail from residents of Quincy and other villages within Middlesex County. This early stage of postal service helped ensure that residents could easily connect with one another and commerce grew rapidly because individuals could send goods directly to their neighbors without having to go through larger merchants or channels. The first store opened in 1814 and by 1830 there were four stores operating in town proper; two dairy stores, one blacksmith shop, one flour mill, three sawmills and two grist mills. By 1840 there were ten businesses operating in town; five dairies, four grocery stores, two transportation agencies (steamboats), three printing presses (one for local newsprinting services only) and two churches. In 1851 Agawam became a separate municipality when it split from Middlesex County following the creation of New England states into which Massachusetts had been divided by then-President James K Polk based on his political theory of national demographic division as advocated by Senator Daniel Webster who also served on the New England Committee established to make this decision. As part of its reorganization effort following incorporation into municipal government Agawam lost much business activity due to competition from nearby Quincy which had consolidated its post office services into one location while also prospering economically thanks to its large manufacturing sector including shipbuilding etcetera under new owner Samuel Slater Jr.. A decadeslong effort led by Mayor Ira Cahn during the 1950s culminated with installation of modern streetlights throughout town center followed by construction of a new library building which occurred during 1960–1961 comprising several blocks east of downtown along Route 9A between Washington Street northwardly until Route 5 widens out forming an open plaza extending eastward across High Street southwesterly until it reaches Interstate 95 just past exit 19B near Milton Academy; this project finally resulted in increased traffic volumes upon opening resulting in an increase in property values around town center making it more economically attractive for businesses wishing to locate there rather than driving down long arterial streets such as High Street or Meeting House Place primarily serving residences thereby benefiting both pedestrians and motorists alike[citation needed]. Today Agawam remains largely rural with some light industrial activity taking place but most commercial activities take place just outside city limits closer to Highway 9A/I-95 beltway providing easy access for shopping destinations such as Foxboro Center mall located 12 miles west southwest along I-95 Exit 15B Toll Road Junction while Worcester Center mall located 25 miles northeast along I-495 Exit 20 provides more complex retail experiences not found within city limits such as large department stores like Macy’s or Sears alongside smaller specialty shops not often found elsewhere within commuting distance like Bick’s Sporting Goods or Michaels respectively offering high quality items at reasonable prices not typically found at larger department store locations adjacent unto urban areas notwithstanding those suburban malls contain higher priced items featuring finer design options inaccessible inside city limits] .
