In the late 1800s, Agawam was a small town in western Massachusetts. It was located on the banks of the Chenango River and had a population of around 100 people. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1636 and quickly became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1825, Agawam passed through an act annexing Westchester County, which created new jurisdiction for the town. The following year,Agawam voted to become a city. By 1881, Agawam had a population of over 1,000 people and was host to two large businesses: Pawnbroker's store and J.H.'s grocery store. During World War I, Agawam served as a base for American troops fighting in France. Between 1917 and 1919, the United States government purchased land near the center of town and built Fort Sumter Army Base. This fort played an important role in supporting American efforts during World War I; it also housed some of America's largest gunsights used during that conflict. After World War I ended, Agawam saw its greatest growth period; it became home to several large factories including Singer Sewing Machine Company (later known as sweaters), General Electric Company (later known as GE), and Bethlehem Steel Corporation (later known as Boeing). Several other major companies moved into the town after these industries left; such as Shell Oil Company (now ExxonMobil) and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (now Mitsubishi Carpets & Home). In recent years, Agawam has begun to experience decline due to various factors; namely high crime rates and its proximity to New York City. However, there is still potential for this community to rebound should certain measures be taken such as investment in infrastructure or increased funding from local government officials

A market town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Agawam was first settled by English colonists in 1636 and named for Captain John Smith's landing on the coast of what is now Maine. The town was incorporated as a village in 1836 and became a town in 1959. In 1764, during the French and Indian War, General George Washington invaded Nova Scotia and found there were no exits from Canada other than through Acadia. To find a way to escape this embargoed province he sent a detachment of British regulars under Colonel Edward Rutland to explore the interior of Canada. They discovered an opening into New France that led to the present-day town of Agawam. The early pioneers of Agawam were primarily farmers who raised livestock, hogs, chickens and pigs. By 1800, however, some residents had established themselves as merchants or published newspapers. The first store opened in 1824 and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. A school was built in 1834 and remained operational until it burned down in 1903; however, local legend has it that it was rebuilt using money donated by local citizens after the fire destroyed their original building. TheAgawam railroad arrived at Agawam on December 12th 1861 making it possible for goods brought into Boston to be shipped out immediately without waiting for transportation costs associated with sailing vessels or carriages. This new development not only helped increase commerce but also made possible rapid growth within the small community which eventually reached its peak population size of 1,500 people in 1920s when primary schools were added as well as libraries and theaters). Agawam is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settler in Agawam was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1636 and named it after his home city of Jamestown, Virginia. The town's first meeting was on October 3, 1638 when twelve men from Ipswich met to discuss claims to land around what is now Agawam Pond. In 1641, the town voted to name itself after General Samuel Adams as thanks for his support of the town during its early days. In 1795, the legislature changed the Town Charter to allow for white people to purchase land within the limits of Agawam Township while still giving Native Americans exclusive hunting rights. This led to increased tensions between whites and Indians which culminated with a series of armed confrontations known as "The Battle of Bunker Hill". The indigenous people were forced off their lands and many died in the violence that followed; this event has been called "the end of civilization" by some historians. After years of legal wrangling, an agreement was reached in 1827 whereby Englishmen who had bought land within Agawam would be given back their holdings if they moved out into open territory outside the township boundaries; however, most residents chose not to leave and maintained their businesses withintown limits until 1955 when they were granted voting rights by local officials In 1836 John Smith's grandson Isaac came over from England and received a grant from Massachussetts Governor Winthrop Wolcott for 1/4 acre (0.24 km²) on what would become Old Saybrook Road east of modern-day Route 128 . He named it 'Agawam' after his home city where he had been born about 15 years earlier.. In 1850 there were only 8 families living here according to one source but by 1870 there were 100+. By 1900 therewere more than 200 residents including 85 farmers ... There are several churches still extant today (Church Of Our Lady Of Charity #2 & #3), as well as stores (New England Clothing Emporium), post office (), fire department (), school district (), 4 baseball diamonds () & 4 tennis courts (). Most notably this Village has always been very active politically with 2 Congregational Churches having gone through numerous pastors (& opposition).
