Agawam is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,935 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Agawam were men and women who came overland from England in 1636. They built their first house on the present site of Agawam Light Laboratory on May 1, 1638. On February 18, 1647, they voted to change their name to Ipswich after the town in Suffolk England where they had been living for several years before that. The new name was chosen because it would sound more like "Ipswich Estates" (later Ipswich) which was then being developed as a fashionable resort town by Increase Mather and his family. In 1796 Samuel Eliot Morison wrote about the history of Ipswich when he visited it for the first time: "It has been reckoned one of our most important towns... At one time there numbered nearly two hundred families... [and] considerable trade [was] done with New England and Europe." In 1824 local resident John Fenton donated land to build a Friends Meeting House on what is now Elm Street in honor of his deceased wife Susannah Fenton who had been a Quaker leader during colonial times. In 1827 this building became known as the Town Hall and remains so today. The early mills included those owned by Caleb Strong including an gristmill (dedicated November 8, 1792), a sawmill (dedicated January 6th, 1798), and three corn mills (dedicated October 25th 1822). These mills produced flour for local merchants and also exported flour to Boston through long-distance transportation systems such as mail coach service between Boston and Ipswich involvedloading flour onto small boats at Long Island Sound before sailing upriver to Kingston or Salemport where it was unloaded onshore and shipped out again using ferries across Narragansett Bay until 1840 when paddle wheelers became available which allowed larger quantities of goods to be transported directly from Hullsborough Landing on Cape Cod Bay without passage through Narragansett Bay

Agawam was a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence, Rhode Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Agawam was John Eliot who arrived there in 1636. The town was named for General Arthur Amherst and his wife Judith Agnew (née Greenough). In 1765, the British burned down much of Ipswich after a night raid by Native Americans; this destroyed much of Lucy Stone's farmland and killed or captured many people and their families. A group of men from Agawam led by Captain Ebenezer Sprague rebuilt Ipswich and founded what is now known as Spraguetown on land they acquired from the British. In 1821, when Quincy became an independent city under state law, it lost its status as a village because no one lived within its bounds. On December 12th of that year residents voted to annex Agawam into Quincy so that it would have more autonomy. However, this annexation did not take place because only 10% of votes were cast; instead the two villages amalgamated into one municipality on January 1st of the following year under state law with the name "Quincy". This merger created problems for both towns as they each had their own leaders who controlled different aspects of municipal life: Quincy's mayor was directly elected while Agawam's Mayor was appointed based on vote totals rather than individual qualifications; additionally all real estate transactions were conducted through Quincy rather than Agawam until 1888 when all property transactions were done through Quincy again due to differences in zoning laws which had been changed since 1821. In 1916–1920s local farmers gave up their cultivated lands to build large factory farms near Springfield where goods such asTextile mills and automobiles were developed during World War I – these Factory Farm developments are now known as Old Town neighborhoods in Springfield proper while most residential areas around them have been abandoned or redeveloped into office blocks or other high-density housing developments. This paved way for Interstate 95 which bypassed nearby communities like agawams downtown/central business district (CBD) via Route 128 then New Hampshire Avenue before coming to rest just north-northwest of old town along present day Route 128Earlston Road near Staples Center (now Goodyear Centre). Interstate 95 also greatly accelerated suburban growth which has dramatically changed demographics and character ofOld Town neighborhoods since those times
Agawam was first settled in 1636 by Puritan colonists, and became a town in 1777. The town was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1845, but was re-established in 1865. Agawam is now a part of Rockland County.
