The town is named for King Philip's War and the Battle of Agawam (1575). The first permanent settler in what became Agawam was Nicholas Raynham who arrived in 1631. He named his land "Agawam". In 1639 the town motto was "Nemo me impune lacessit." In 1795, during the American Revolutionary War, British General Benedict Arnold ordered his forces to clear out all of Agawam from the Patriotists under Captain John Glover. After Arnold's death in 1799, Congress commissioned Colonel Ebenezer Fiske to take over operations in that area and made him Superintendent of Indian Affairs for New England. This gave rise to many rumors about how Fiske managed Indian affairs since he had no experience with them. One such rumor said that Fiske plundered and looted Indian villages while he was superintendent. FISKE WAS FIRED FROM HIS job IN A WHITE HOUSE CORRUPTION CASE AND THEN PROSECUTED FOR TREASON AFTER INVESTIGATING THE CASE AGAINST HIM! In 1814 Agawam became a part of Hampden County when it was formed from parts of Hampshire and Worcester counties. During its early years it used an ordinance-making process which resembled that of colonial Rhode Island where elected officials were granted certain privileges by Great Britain without being subject to popular vote or election cycles like those enjoyed by Englishmen living within their colonies

Agawam, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Worcester-Manchester Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Agawam was Andrew Gardner who arrived in 1639. Other early settlers include John Warner and his family (1655), James Fenway (c 1715), Nicholas Kirkland (1760-1770) and Samuel Adams (1768). The most important event to occur in the town was the decision by the General Court on July 9, 1776 to make Boston their capital. This moved Agawam from its original location near Sudbury to within walking distance of government buildings in what would become downtown Boston. In 1836, four years after sectional violence erupted over Attorney General William Seward's pro-union speech at a meeting of state legislators in Charlestown, Mass., agitators burned down homes and barns throughout townships along the Worcester River Valleywest of Worcester; Agawam was one such community targeted. On October 10th of that year an act approved by Congress provided for $10 per acre (a doubling of the $3 paid for land elsewhere) for canals and ditches necessary for maintainingagricultural production; this helped stimulate development around Agawam which soon included a cotton gin, sawmill and grist mill as well as various stores and dwellings. In 1840 Union troops burned down five houses on Main street just west of present day State Road 128 near present day Webster Avenue while en route to battle against Confederate forces encampment nearby at Southbridge Heights; no one was injured but several acres were destroyed including part of what became Elmhurst Cemetery today’s business district south of I-495 between Tremont Street and Arlington Avenue. As a result of this vandalism several hundred dollars worth booty were taken with everything from furniture to farm tools eventually being stored away until finally sold off during Reconstruction days when prices soared due to increased demand following America’s entry into World War II thanks largely to President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal programs which involved increasing agricultural production through federal subsidies then giving these subsidies back to farmers upon market demand
Agawam is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Agawam was named for William Bradford (1624–1702), an English minister and governor of Plymouth Colony.
