Agawam, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settler in Agawam was Nathaniel Maverick who arrived in 1636. He built a house on the present site of the town in 1638 and named it after himself, Agawam (from "ágawa," meaning "plain"). In 1641, Edmund Andros purchased land east of Agawam from Nathaniel Maverick and built Andros House there. On July 26, 1643, John Winthrop founded the town of Northampton in what is now Hampshire County as an offshoot of Agawam. In 1756–57 Ebenezer Cooke acquired some territory to the west of Agawam from John Winthrop and laid out Cook's Purchase including present day Acadia Heights. In 1777 Indian hostilities led to War for Independence and English troops burned down most of northeastern New England; only a few buildings remained standing by that time in towns such as South Hadley and Framingham—towns which later absorbed parts of Agawam into their populations. A post office called “Agowammus” was established at its current location on March 7th 1837 by order of Governor Samuel Adams with Vail Post Office taking over on May 1st following routing through Ipswich due to lack thereof at that time; originally one room high with an external door for entry; today’s building is two stories tall with an indoor/outdoor entrance providing access from Main Street & Blue Hill Avenue On November 2nd 1839 select men from three villages along Long Island Sound met at Bunker Hill Village & voted to form Aroostook County under leadershipof Capt Benjamin Graves USN commanding officer Atisknowocky River Station thenceforward known as Portsmouth Beachhead During World War II many residents moved away or were evacuated during The Blitz but a few people like Harry Golden remained to fight together until they all left when Germany surrendered on May 8th 1945
