The history of Agawam, Massachusetts is intertwined with the history of guns. The town was founded by Captain John Winthrop in 1620 as a trading post on the south bank of the Charles River. It grew quickly, and by 1635 it had a population of around 500 people. In that year, Captain Winthrop decided to build a fort at the site, and he named it Fort Warren. By 1765, Fort Warren had been abandoned for years, and its buildings were used as barns and windmills. But in 1767, General James Wolfe's army came through Agawam on their way to battle against British forces at Saratoga Springs. While besieging Fort Ticonderoga in New York City, Wolfe's army passed through Agawam on their way back to Canada. When they reached Canada, they burned all the buildings in town except for one which was used as an ammunition depot. But things changed after that. For years afterward, Agawam remained a sleepy little village until it got its first gun barrel! The first gun barrel ever manufactured inAgawam was made in 1825 by Nicholas-Jacques Fournier et Cie., an armourer who lived near the then-new arsenal located on Main Street today (now part of Old South Square). That same year saw also the first opening of what later became known as "the rifle range," east of downtown Agawam – now part of North Adams Regional High School. Since then, gun barrels have been a integral part of our town's history – from being used to fire off shotguns during carnival fun days during summertime to serving as display objects at local museums and historical sites across our community (e.g., Agawam Arsenal Museum). In recent decades even more special features have been added: from airsoft play areas for kids to NRA training courses for adults!
