In 1753, colonists in what is now Agawam began using muskets and handguns. These firearms were very inaccurate and required much practice to be effective. However, they soon became popular among the militiamen of Boston Township during the French and Indian War (1754-1814). In 1775, Massachusetts became an independent country under the rule of George Washington. As part of this new nation, gun laws were changed to allow for the purchase and use of pistols and rifles by all citizens. This period was also marked by a proliferation of ammunition magazines as well as pistol clubs and hunting tournaments across New England. By 1800, bullet production had increased significantly in America due to technological advances such as percussion caps (which allowed rounds to be reused multiple times) and rifled barrels. Ammunition companies like Winchester began exporting their products around the world. By 1830, Agawam had become one of the leading American producers of bullets thanks to its location on Long Island Sound and access to quality raw materials. The town continued producing Bullets through World Wars I and II until it was discontinued in 1961 because of declining demand for ammunition due to advancements in technology. Bullet production resumed after World War III but again declined thereafter because of stricter regulation from government agencies concerned about potential public health hazards associated with bullet use

A locomotive shop and freight depot were built in 1865 by the Boston & Maine Railroad; these remain in use today as Agawam Station (see also: ). Agawam was a town in Massachusetts, United States, founded by the Pilgrims in 1620. It became a town seat in 1784. The population of Agawam was 5,854 at the 2010 census. The town was located on the north bank of the Charles River east of Boston, and it grew up around two small villages: Agawam and Winthrop. The first permanent settler in Agawam was Nicholas Copley, who arrived about 1620. He built a house near what is now Winthrop Street, and he also built a mill on the river. In 1630, John Smith set up his own store just west of where Agawam stands today. By 1640, there were several other stores in town; some were owned by men from Ipswich (now Quincy), other towns to the south or west of Boston. In 1784, when Worcester County was created from parts of Middlesex and Suffolk counties, Agawam became part of that county. It remained an agricultural community until after World War II when industry began to grow here as well; manufacturing includes textiles such as clothing and paper products as well as electronic equipment and plastics such as Teflon
In 1764, the town of Agawam was founded by Increase Mather and his family. In 1837, it became a part of the United States of America.
