Agawam is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,784 at the 2010 census. The name "Agawam" is derived from the Agawam River which flows through the town. The first permanent settler in Agawam was John Smith in 1634. He built a small cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Plymouth." The first school in Agawam was built by Reverend James Stone in 1775. It was called "Alden School" because it was located on Alden Pond, which served as the town's water supply. In 1822, a group of settlers laid out a new township on land that had been donated by Captain Simon Bradstreet. They named their new community "Agawam". The town grew rapidly and by 1830 there were over 100 residents living in Agawam proper and dozens more scattered around its periphery. By 1836, the Snelling Canal had arrived and Agawams main industry became shipping canal boatbuilding; however this quickly ended when ships became too expensive to build and maintain afloat. In 1849, John Fenton bought land adjacent to present-day Quincy for $10 per acre (the price then prevailing). Fenton developed this land into farmland that included what is now downtown Agawam. In 1861, the legislature passed an act providing for public education within limits prescribed by law; henceforth all children residing within normal local limits were required to attend public schools regardless ofwealth or parental refusal to do so. In 1865, during the American Civil War, most of what is today Quincy took part in hostilities as Union troops encampment while supplies were being transported through Massachusetts'. Confederate forces occupied much of Quincy until early 1865 when they abandoned it following word Union troops had surrendered at Appomattox Court House south of Boston. This left many homes unoccupied during Reconstruction period with few people moved back into them since property values plummeted after wartime depreciation caused businesses closures and job losses across much rural New England including AgawAM where many families still live today although prices have rebounded somewhat

Agawam is a small town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The Agawam River rises in Hampshire County and flows eastward through the town before turning northwest and joining the Mystic River near Holyoke. The river formed part of the boundary between Manchester and Worcester counties until 1803, when they were merged into Massachusetts. The Butterfield Overland Mail route passed through Agawam from 1837 to 1861, when it was replaced by the Central Railroad of Massachusetts. Agawam was first settled in 1634 by John Winthrop and his brother Samuel; it acquired its name from an Indian word meaning "place where there are many trees." A courthouse in Agawam was built in 1796, during which time it served as a court for both Hampshire and Middlesex Counties. In 1801, most of what is now Agawam village was included within present-day Sheffieldvillage (); however, that village remained active until its dissolution in 1907. The townsite lying east of Sheffieldvillage (the present-day core of Agawam) became part of what is now Derbyville when that village incorporated as a separate municipality on April 15, 1909. On May 10th, 1915 – one week after America's entry into World War I – Derbyville merged with neighboring Sunderland to form what is now known as agawamsouthderlandgovt., an entity subordinate to no county or municipal organization but immediately under the jurisdiction of Bristol County government.. By 1930 there were only 50 residents living within all 6 villages/towns combined; however this number had swollen to over 1200 by 1950 due largely to post-World War II growth along Interstate 95 outside southeastern NH & MA communities
