In 1859 Rev Jansen established His Majesty's Factory Ammunition Land on Water Street near modern day Dudley Street in what is now Agawam Village Center . This factory manufacturing cannon balls became known as "HMS" after King George II's ship HMS Victory which had made them famous during the Napoleonic Wars . These new cannons were designed by British engineer Edmund Cartwright who also designed warships such as HMS Glorious and HMS Warrior .
