Westminster is home to the University of Mary Washington and St. John's Episcopal Church, which are both on the campus of Bowie State University. It borders Bowie and Silver Spring to the north-northwest and Mount Vernon to the east-east. The first European settler in what is now Westminster was Nicholas de Montfort, who arrived in 1684 with his brother Thomas de Montfort from England. Nicholas had married Anne Arundel, daughter of King James II of England and III of Scotland. In 1727 Frederick Calvert founded Baltimore as an agricultural society for developing this area west of the Susquehanna River. That same year Charles Carroll purchased land east of present-day Bowie Street from Nicholas DeMontfort for £1 million (at $10 per acre). On October 20, 1746, Carroll donated one acre (0.40 km2) south of "Mount Vernon" to become "Westminster Heights." In 18th century America there were few towns large enough to be called "cities." Westminster grew out of a small group of farmers who took up residence around a court house on Whatcom Road in what is now Old Georgetown Township near modern day Silver Spring. They developed a trading post and built their own houses between 1768-1770 when they became known as Westmarchites because their settlement was located along Westmarch Pike between Annandale Road and Federal Hill Drive today known as Independence Mall in Bethesda - then part of Prince George's County - across from President George Washington's Mount Vernon estate where he lived until his death on March 14th, 1800 just two days after becoming president following James Ketchum's death that same year; only three days before he resigned due to concerns about military spending potentials during War Of 1812 A courthouse stood on this site until 1903 when it burned down; later its replacement served as government offices until 1976 when it burned again leaving it vacant for over 25 years until it was replaced by new government headquarters building also serving as office space for several local businesses including Alltechsys Inc., which moved into its current location in 2006 making it one block away from historically significant Third World community known as Woodley Parkade Apartments that have been vacant since 2007 according to city officials wonderful views looking out over downtown Bethesda couldn't be avoided so business people decided they'd move out onto Constitution Avenue instead In 1871 Congressman Richard Mifflin decided to build a park adjacent to Capitol Building across Constitution Avenue NW from woodley parkade apartments giving rise ultimately name Westminster for all those living within 1 mile radius
