Westminster is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Westminster is located on 4 square miles (10 km²). The first settlers in what would become Westminster arrived in 1784 from Virginia. They were Hugh Fraser and his family, who built a log cabin on the west bank of the Patapsco River. In 1814, John Crouch moved to Westminster from nearby Cumberland with his wife and two children when their farm failed. In 1815, Benjamin Rush bought land adjacent to Fraser's cabin and began construction of Blair House which became the first brick house in Westminster. In 1827, Samuel Morse established a post office in what would become Westminster and named it after himself; this was also the year that he laid the cornerstone for Blair House. In 1830-31, James Biddle founded Potomac Paper Mill on West Point Road just north of present day Old Georgetown Road. On July 1, 1832 - days before Baltimore's incorporation as a city - Biddle opened The Maryland Gazette at 5th & Market Streets which served as both local paper mill publication and ceremonial center for early Baltimoreites including Mayor Auld and future Ulysses S Grant who delivered speeches there on occasions such as inaugurations or state funerals while still living at home with his mother! At its peak business throughput generated over $2 million per annum! In 1836-37 Daniel Webster founded The Maryland Republican Party here which functioned as an unofficial opposition party to President Andrew Johnson during this period of political turmoil preceding America’s Civil War vernacularly known as “the Great Unification” – also see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Webster#Political_ Career_and_life From 1840 until 1861 public education was only available through private tutors licensed by Northern banks; however enrollment increased following passage of "National Education Laws" (1842) providing free public education across racial lines throughout Maryland utilizing system developed by Governor Hunter Morrissey & Commissioner David Wilkins In 1865-66 school consolidation movement led by some prominent men including then Superintendent Charles Whelan led to closure of several small schools thereby creating three large district schools called Central School District #1 comprising parts of Bowie & Northwest Harford counties; these districts were abolished by order of General Order No.–5 dated December 12th 1966 effective January 1st 1967 resulting in creation of one unified school district – Central School District #2 comprising all unincorporated portions eastof Carrollton Line

Westminster was founded in 1736 and has been the seat of government for Prince George's County since 1775. It is known as "The Capital of Maryland" because it was the first capital of the United States. In 1776, General Washington Bainbridge and Colonel John Smith were appointed to lead an expedition against Lord Baltimore and his troops at Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. When Washington arrived in Westminster on July 12, he gave a public address before 100 people including British Prime Minister William Pitt. After that victory over Lord Baltimore, Congress passed resolutions declaring independence from Great Britain and named Westminster as the new capital of America. On October 10, 1776, King George III made recognition of America's independence by appointing James Kieft as governor general of Maryland with responsibility for all American settlements east of the Potomac River. On November 3d, Kieft published a proclamation announcing that "the remains of His Majesty's late Governor General James Kieft are interred within this limits." Aftermath When British forces evacuated Fort McHenry in 1814 they left behind much military equipment which later became part of Crown property including cannons and ammunition stores located near present-day Tysons Corner mall across Frederick Street from Fort McHenry National Monument & Museum (now part of Smithsonian National Park). In 1815 during the Peninsular War between England and Spain (1808-1813), Spanish troops under Lieutenant Francisco de Miranda invaded Prince George's County while munitions were being unloaded from HMS Guerriero at Tysons Corner Mall; Columbia Barracks were burned down after Miranda’s forces captured it early on October 15th 1815 but little damage done to buildings other than some rubble along Frederick Street; pistols found inside gun store have been authenticated as having originated with Spanish forces during Peninsular War period
