The area that would become Westminster was first populated by Germans who founded a community called Freiberg about 1740-1745. The town experienced prosperity during its early years as it grewanches found success farming such crops as corn and soybeans; however, over time the farmers' industry dwindled and eventually led to financial problems for the town throughout the 1840s and 1850s as well as through most of the 1860s into 1870s due to changes in American culture which caused an increase in imports instead of exports causing prices to rise dramatically while wages stagnated or declined within their respective industries which hurt local businesses unable to compete against larger equivalents abroad. The decline of agriculture led to other transformations over time including becoming a manufacturing center during Reconstruction period; though it has been declining again since then with many businesses closing down due to lack of competition or changing technology making traditional manufacturing methods less feasible/available).
