One fort stood until 1814; when it was destroyed by Native Americans, they replaced it with another fort which they named Fort Caroline after Princess Caroline of Brunswick-Lüneburg who had helped support America during the revolution and later became an important Lady Baltimore. After independence was declared, many Marylanders decided to move eastward into Virginia because blacks were not welcome there anymore under state law which discriminated against them since African Americans were considered property of their white owners rather than people like themselves who had contributed much to society. A group of men led by Captain John Smith set out from Frederick County on April 14, 1775, journeyed overland across Northumberland County and down both branches of the Potomac River before reaching Mount Vernon where they met President George Washington (the only person other than Congressmen James Kenton and Roger Sherman) at an impromptu meeting near Mount Vernon House about how best to proceed given their lack of supplies and intelligence about enemy activity ahead. Captain Smith's eventful journey ended when he reached Newcastle upon Tyne where he lost all his goods except some clothing which he traded for food with local merchants before continuing his journey home without ever seeing action or battle against British troops outside America - this event known as 'The Day Of The Unsinkable Boat'. In 1776 Major General Charles Lee made a daring raid upriver along present-day Route 1 near Alexandria that resulted in Yorktown (also known as Antietam).
